This stinks

Sea Pro distributors, who are the exclusive wholesalers for many fishing products on Vancouver Island, will not sell to Wise Buys in Colwood.
Why...
Word from reliable sources say it is because Trotac and Island Outfitters don't want the competition!
It's time to put a stop to this unfair practice!
If anyone has any influence with Sea Pro, now is the time to put pressure on Sea Pro, Trotac and Island Outfitters to stop this unfair practice!
Ward and Campbell...
how about stepping up and doing a post right now saying you would NEVER suggest Sea Pro not sell to a competitor...any competitor...
AND Sea Pro post that you are willing to give a fair deal to all fishing stores.
It's the right thing to do!
Then again, maybe I have it all wrong...if so, please say so.

Any proof to this post? Fogged you have kinda posted this same stuff before. Do you have any actual facts?

X2

There's always two sides to every story-my own experience with Sea Pro is that they will sell to any retailer who maintains their account.

Last I checked Sea Pro had few exclusives-Coleman coolers was about it and they're nothing special-everything else is available from other sources

I understand your post about proof. If I hadn't had it confirmed by no fewer than 6 reliable sources, I would not have believed it either!!!
I would suggest you try talking to a few of the guys in the industry...start with the guys at Wise Buys.
The former owner of Radiant Lures is also in the know.
Your question is just like the Island Outfitter Boat Show freeze out the competition...no I do not have any proof of that either other than what I have been told, but it is true

Thi sucks but it is fairly standard practice for retailers in victoria with decent product lines. Either the wholesaler does it automatically to sell more merchandise to fewer retailers to reduce handling costs, or larger retailers demand the territory. There are some retailers that actully go to new wholesalers and get the territory loocked down, with no intention of ordering much product as the already have a supplier of similar product. They do this to lock their competitors out. It is a race to the new products and suppliers at trade shows and you have to go further away and spend more to find good product that the bully retailers have not blocked access to. Retailing on the island is a ***** with high costs and established bullies defending turf. Thats the market here.

I've heard that before too. For that reason, I take most of my business to Wise Buys. I think it's great to have stores like that around. I hit up Canadian Tire before I go to IO. Just my 2 cents.....

I went into wise buys looking to special order a lure. I was told they can't order it as that company only sells to IO. So that's where I went. Backfired a little instead of just ordering what I wanted they got in tons of them so my exclusive lure was available for all to purchase. Oh well all sold now I think probably kicking around the bottom if a few tackle boxes in town. Guys that have em don't know what they got ;)

this is normal practice in business, nothing to see here.

This I agree with. If you want to start with a store that pressures their suppliers for special deals, then start with Walmart. Unless this is only about price. These other business are just doing whatever they can to survive.

Happy to see this subject has gone past the "show me the evidence" stage.
BUT the Walmart example is not valid as I can get pretty much any popular product they sell, like fishing tackle, elsewhere.
The issue here is some popular fishing equipment is not readily being made available to one shop IN ORDER TO TRY AND DRIVE THEM OUT OF BUSINESS....We are not talking car dealerships here.
MY sense of fair play says pressure needs to be put on Sea Pro Distributors to stop this practice.

Anyone in business knows suppliers will align themselves with distributors of their choice.
lots of factors involved ,credit history, personalities etc.
Seapro may have had prexisting agreements with the other distributors.
When you're the new guy on the block, sometimes new avenues of supply become necessary.

Hey Fogged In, what do you do for a living? Does the company you work for or own have competitor companies? Do you have a trade? Do you or your company have to bid on work? Do you really feel any person that wants to open a store should be able to get the same distribution connections as the shop down the street that's been in it for years. Should they get their product at the same cost as their competitor as well?

A successful business is a competitive business. It takes smarts not just an open door and a smile.

If your support is because their your friends or your have other interests in this store, going on a public forum a complaining about a distributor isn't going to help them.

Good Luck with your fight........ :)

No interest in the store in question what so ever!
Don't know the owners at all and shop there only occasionally.
Me...I am retired....love to fish and have fished all my life...
I do have a sense of fair play and I think this stinks.
Just my opinion and wanted to know how others felt.
I guess I am in the minority????

Fogged In,

What did you do for a living? Care to share

If everything was fair in business it would all be about location and who you knew right? No that would be wrong

As then the land lord would be unfair or your friends or clients were.

Your rant here I feel was pointless and unfair. And if you want to start talking about fair play, is bashing a distributor on a public forum fair.

Move On........ Don't waste your retirement years, go fishing :)

FA " bashing unfair?" I remember when you started a public bash on a certain boat builder that hadn't been convicted of anything.

Seafever,

You want me to revisit some of the garbage you have posted... :) LOL

If I did was it right? Did anyone actually bash him? I don't recall or care. It wasn't me making jokes that in fact he had worked on my boat or threatening to burn his shop down. In fact I still had him work on my boat while he had his legal problems and still do. Good of you to bring it back up.....NOT

Now there was me bashing a certain boat servicing company in Courtenay next to the 17th street bridge and I still would if it wouldn't get me band. But I do bad mouth them every chance I get as they did screw me and others and continue to do so.

Fish Assasin
I worked as a supplier to business, large and small.
But this is not about me.
Sorry you find my opinion on this subject to be a “Rant” and that you feel I am “bashing a distributor”
Certainly your interpretation of “Fair Play” is very different then mine!
Thanks for your final bit of advice....You can bet I am not wasting my retirement years!!!::):)

I was in there last week and was told that they found a supplier that will now sell them some of the unavailable brands like O'ki tackle and Shimano etc. He said they should be fully stocked by summer.

Glad to hear Wise Buys has got a good source for gear. Great shop to glean information from about fishing...and super cool that they developed their own reel...shows an interest above and beyond just chasing money. Seems strange they could not just buy direct from Oki...just a short truck ride away, and in sales volume...we'll it speaks volumes!

I hear they are coming out with a more a affordable reel than the coast...that should be interesting.

End of the day the more shops I have around me...the better the deals.
