Some of the FN hatchery work on the Columbia hints at restoring these fish. They actually spawned far up the Columbia in BC til the Bonneville dam was built w/o a fish ladder in the early 1940's. Beginning in the mid 1800's the mentality developed that any ecological impact can be reversed by Hatcheries, which began on the Columbia in 1860 or so.
FYI an 83 lb fish was caught in 1938 near Everett WA; the place I take my fish for smoking has the article on the wall.
