Wow that was quite the storm on southern Vancouver Island. I just heard that one boat sunk at the dock in Sooke, just the bow sticking up. Could be a good idea to check on your boats, make sure the bilge pumps are working .
Just got back from Moxies Classic grill and saw the coast guard cutter Point Race, our local RCMP boat ,all escorting the PR1 towing about a 30' boat in to Discovery Harbour Marina. What that boat was doing out in this storm is beyond me ! Good meal and service there BTW,..........BB
IFL, how are your two boats coping with this wind and rain? Are they about to float off your front lawn? My little whaler is in the carport just north of you a few blocks......BB
Power went out at 7am-- still no power at7pm. Went down to take a look at Point Holmes near Comox. Winds gusting to 118kph, 8ft seas (maybe higher-- hard to judge) rolling into the beach and there is one nutcase trying to surf!! After trying twice to get out past the broken water into the rollers, he gave up . For a while it looked like a body recovery coming up!
Also saw one kid about 5 or 6 flattened by the wind!! He hit the dirt pretty hard... [xx(]
Howe Sound was nuts with our mill's windometer reading one gust of 160 Km/h. I had the honour of being deckhand on our tug today and had to assist Seaspan with one of their scows as they were having trouble lining them up on arrival, then 2 lines snapped on 3 parked empty scows swinging them onto the rocks which made for an adventure as we were hit broadside with steady 90-100 km/h winds. After getting them tucked in and retied one of our scows parked in the docks for offloading got a blast from the other direction via Squamish and snap went her bow lines and spun into the beach causing damage to our offloading ramp and breaking the heavy duty mooring line/chains in the process. All in all a real crazy day on the water! I feel lucky to have made it back to shore in one piece and have a whole new respect for the water. Just had to get this off my chest as I'm still vibrating from the experience sorry if its long winded.

Could not go fishing so got the camera out and went down to Clover point and the Break Water this afternoon and snapped away.. Wish I went in the morning I was watching the waves on the web cams and it had come down a fair bit by the time I got down there.. Here's a link to my slide show I put up on Google Picasa.. (after you click the link, hit F11 on your key board to view in full screen, remember to hit F11 again after your done)
Nice pics. The surfers give some perspective to how big things are.Glad we made our run from Van-Vic last weekend and not this one, be hard to keep coffee pot on.
An amazing Easter storm, 12 foot seas and Hurricane force gusts, Have not heard of any loss of life, the Coast Guard did a great job. A lot of damage and shattered dreams though. The pictures of wrecked docks and damaged boats in the Times Colonist says it all. I guess there is a reason they call the west coast of Vancouver Island the grave yard of the Pacific. http://www.timescolonist.com/news/news/2756978/story.html?tab=PHOT
The guys from the sailboat that sunk off Entrance said the rogue wave that hit them was over 25 feet high. The same one that blew out the window on the ferry that was 30 feet up.
I picked up the two guys from the RCMP boat and took them to the hospital in Nanaimo. They said it was the years of training on various marine safety courses that helped them thru this ordeal. As well as the people that came to the rescue. Thanks to all.
