Found myself caught between the Broken Islands and Ucluelet on Friday unable to get my main engine started and a broken connection on the remote steering apparatus for my kicker. Four foot chop and wind picking up. Called the Coast Guard and they put out a broadcast for help on Ch 16. Ernie from Barrhaven, Alberta, responded and arrived about 10 minutes later in his big Sea Ranger Tug boat. He had been out fishing and was heading back to Ucluelet. Without a second thought, he took me under tow and we slowly made our way in - about 6 NM at a 4.5 Kn/Hr pace. Tofino CG radio had notified the Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria who dispatched the Cape McKay out of Bamfield. The McKay ran with us for about 20 minutes to make sure we were in OK shape to make it to Ucluelet.
While I was a pretty worried fellow until Ernie showed up - we made it to port safe and sound.
Ernie's view of the whole thing was to say that he hoped someone would do the same thing for him one day. He's got a big one in the bank as far as I'm concered. Thanks Ernie!!!
