The Big Lings

So you are saying that if I leave a small greenling on the hook and keep it in the water for a while before pulling it up, I am a bad person LOL!!!!! And live herring bait is now a no-no????

Again, we get into the realm of looking for a problem where there isnt one!!!!!!

Using live bait is perfectly legal for bottom fishing as long as there is no direct notice from DFO prohibiting it (as far as I know). It is also legal to catch your own bait as long as the fish being used for bait meet the regular limits (size, count limit etc). So if you are going to use a small rockfish as bait and the daily limit in that area is 1 per day then you can only catch and use one per day. (The one used as bait should count towards your daily limit).

I frequently fish for and catch dogfish, kill them, slit them open and drop them right back to the bottom in a crab trap as bait. I also catch shiner perch, kept live or dead, and use them for bait to catch larger fish. I've caught squid and used them as bait etc. No problem as far as I'm concerned.

Ling Lure

Picked up some of these lures today...complete with scent chamber cut out, about 8" long, should be a ling SLAMMER, no?

Planning to thread a tandem hook set-up for trolling OR cut the head off and use a 4-6oz lead jig head...

could work for halibut too but I've read enough about them!

rigging live bait through the lips or eyes and it wants to swim straight or up, hook it through the anal fin and the fish wants to swim down...

BigDaddy - When they have grabbed on to a small fish you have caught you have to net or gaff them down a little just before they break the surface or they will let go and swim down. Be sure they are open and more than long enough to be legal before you take them.

I caught a 45-50 lb'er up at Langara Island last year. We were Hali hunting, and we used day old chum. Our guide sliced up some strips and also added a herring or two on to the rig. I don't know if the scent has anything to do with attracting lings?

If ya promise them a beer they will bite anything just ask this one.

Just proving that I caught a big one :p It was released....BTW I didn't put that hole in the side of it's head. I only keep lings that are under 15 pounds or so. They are quite easy to catch up at Langara island.

BTW, could someone teach my brother-in-law to take a friggin picture. All the shots he has eith cut off my head or cut off the ling. He is the worst photographer I know.

Oh sorry, I thought they were lungs... er' I'm mean lings.

You can also gangtroll for them with 8oz jigs 3 ft above the canon ball n do 2.5knots.bounce the ball just off the bottom , it is a good way to stay away from by catch.
