TFO paciific mooching reels

thanks i was wondering that exactly...big birthday for me next month my girlfriend wants some (cough) help in picking out a fancy mooching reel for me., guess this one is out...

Unless they address the serious issue of line creep i wont have one, other then that they are a very fine piece of craftsmanship. i am sure that is why alot of people buy n sell them after, the Abel's look very good, but that's a pretty steep price to pay.

If you want a good machined aluminum reel at a good price. Look at the Amundson TMX4, they can be found easily for around $250. Really nice reel, I have one and recommend it. Plus you aren't buying a direct copy of an islander.

Maybe I'm missing something here... I have Islanders, trophys, a TFO and an Abel. They all creep... So what's the big deal? Cork drags are silky smooth with minimal start up inertia (the thing that causes jerky application of drag pressure when a fish turns and runs). Line creep is a result of a drag that works properly when it counts: When the fish is hooked and running!

If you absolutely can't live with creep... get a Scotty netminder, put it on the foregrip of your rod, clip the line in it to stop creep, the moment a fish takes line, or you pick the rod up the release is tripped.

Ya i guess with the cork drags you are expected to have a little line creep , i run shimano's and have no problem with line creep.. it is annoying as hell trolling and watching your reel creep backwards is it not?? why do so many anglers not like it if it is not an issue? would just like to get the best possible reel for the money if spending that much. I have no doubt that islanders are the nicest reels i have tried. I have also seen people use a lake trolling quick release on the foregrip or rodholder to prevent linecreep.

Line creep is an annoyance, and the TFO will do it, but truth be told.. as long as newbies aren't going to be on the boat, the shimano reels get left behind. I liken my anodized reels to a fine sportscar. if your going to get yourself into a street race (playing a decent fish) I'd rather have the porsche than the civic (shimano) , but they leak a little oil when parked in the garage (line creep in the rod holder) and thats an annoyance, not a serious issue.

Back on track... the TFO has a pretty small arbor, line take up is kinda slow and the knobs are small, I prefer the freespool lever on the TFO to the trophy (doesn't get tripped as easily). The Trophy QR has a larger arbor, faster retrieve, but the freespool knob tends to get tripped by clumsy fisherman (accidentally when placing in rod holders), the drag on the trophy's is kind of finicky.. easily fixed by replacing drag spring with one from an MR3. Fished the amundsen, liked it.. but wouldn't buy one because of the ventilated backplate... heavy rain and salt spray threatens to wash lubricants out of bearings and gears, exposes the internals to too much salt and other contaminants in my humble opinion. The "Mooching Soldier" from Admunsen ($200) I would avoid as well... seen a couple blow up on the line spooler already; monofilament and die cast spools are not meant to be together.

Had a chance to check out the new "Coast" reel last week... looks nice and I love the sound. Whether or not it delivers at a cost $50 more than an MR3 remains to be seen.

I'd go with a trophy and upgrade the handles to shimano paddles. I haven't upgraded the drag spring to islander yet but that might be another good mod.

I've got a brand new MR3 bought last spring then in June I won a trophy. I found I really like the free spool on the trophy and it almost feels smoother then the MR3 but that might be in my head. It's certainly equal in smoothness, better handles (once upgraded to shimano) and has free spool all for less $.

Funny to leave my $550 reel sitting at home to take out the $300 (or whatever it costs) trophy knock off but that's what I did most of the year.

P.S line creep is easy to deal with just tighten the drag. You guys running shimano's that "don't creep" keep your drag tight. Don't be fooled any reel left loose will line creep or if its a shimano left loose instead of a smooth creep like the islander the drag holds for awhile then the handles start spinning buzzzzzz and it lets out 8ft of line at once.

for some reason fishermen have been convinced that this is acceptable in a reel worth $500+ - its ridiculous that Islander can get away with putting out a reel that you need to upgrade to get to work correct. They're nice reels but they're nothing special and sure as hell aint worth $500, there's just no decent competition yet.

Hey GDW....do the Shimano paddles fit? I'd really like new handles on my Trophy QR's but I don't have the tools, expertise or balls to start tapping/fiddling with them like in Wolf's thread of a few years back. :o

I bought two TFO's off this site in the spring. Beat the crap out of them all summer and they held up to everything I could give them. I now have 2 TFO's, 6 Trophy's and 4 Islanders. I must say they are all great reels. They all have line creep and they all have pros's and con's.

I think boils down to your budget and what you want to get out of it.

My two cents,

i have never had a problem with the shimano's like you stated, i was on a guided trip last year using an mr2 islander i could crank that drag as tight as possible and still the line would slowly creep out, like Poppa stated this is unacceptable for a 500 dollar reel. My girlfriend want to buy me a fancy reel for my 40 th next month and have it engraved. just not sure i want it on an islander yet..

I have mr2's, mr3's, Trophy's that have since been parked, and 1 TFO pacific and I'll tell you that the TFO is every bit as smooth as the mr2's
and way smoother then the mr3's, mine does not seem to creep like the islanders
I think for the money its a pretty nice little reel
but thats JMO

Ive used TFOs that worked just great... For the price it's not a bad reel at all.
The small arbour is the main issue, you gotta reel like hell to keep up to a good fish.

No worry's i am still up in the air with reels..SO far from what i looked at the trophy qr is in the for front with a disk drag, this reel is interesting though... what about pricing? i i know i can get two trophy's for the price of one Mr3...and where can a guy get one of these reels in his hands..
