Stop the rust...

Hey there, just wondering if there is anything I can coat or spray on my hooks and other tackle to prevent rust from destroying them. Not super worried about the hooks I use for chovies and hootchies but more with the large halibut rigs and jigs. Also the swivels on flashers.

WD-40???

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

How about just caring for them? Rinse after the day is over, dry and store in a dry place!

Get a small bucket and fill it about ½ full of fresh water, and add some normal dishwashing detergent. Place it somewhere you don’t mind getting wet, as it will splash out. Just throw any hooks in and leave the leaders out to keep them from tangling. Throw a rag in, which helps with the splashing and used to wipe the salt water off the tackle and your hands. If you do a lot of fishing, both your tackle and hands will thank you!

At the end of the day, I do spray the downriggers, reels, and almost everything else with WD-40.

Hey Charlie, Scotty warn people not to use WD-40 or any other lubricants on their riggers
maybe Canon are different ??

I keep a small medicine bottle half full of LPS-2 (WD-40 works too) and throw used bearings, snaps etc into until next use. WD tends to blow the lid off if you don't put a pin hole in the cap. A bigger bottle would work for hooks.

Saw on another site to use olive oil as a protectant. Not sure how well it would work. As noted above, fresh water wash and air dry is always best.

I can see that being a problem getting WD-40 on those Scotty belts... My Cannon's are completly sealed, and don't have any kind of "BELTS" :D

Charlie, I've been doing the same thing for a few years now. I just keep a bucket with some Lemon Joy and water under a pedestal seat and just toss stuff in as we change out gear or finish for the day . It sure works great on keeping the tackle clean, removing scent off hootchies, spoons, plugs ect, and as you point out it helps the hands a lot.

I use either lps or corrision block very good stuff as weel and the same with charlie bucket with soapy water with a dab of bleach as I hate the smell of fish on the boat but I tend to be a bit of a clean freak when it comes to my boat. LOL
