Sticky Rod Ferrules

Was checking gear yesterday and one of my Shimano DR rods doesn't want to slide togethor.
Having seen enough 'one-piece' rods that won't come apart I didn't try to force the two halves togethor.
Tried washing and emery cloth on both the male and female sides to no avail.
Suggestions?

Not having any experience with this problem I think i'd try warming the top piece up in hot water or somthing maybe it'll let it expand more so you can slide it on.

Are you sure you have the right halves? I've never heard of that before? Maybe a little oil of some kind? or Silicone Lubricant?

Take only what you need.

Fly shops offer ferrule grease. It is especially formulated to help insert and remove sections without becomming gummy and preventing removal. Oils and silicone are too slick and the top section can come off when unintended. You can possibly warm the female section and ice the male section to see if that helps getting them back together. Is there anything stuck in the female section?

I was taught to roll the male ferule on the side of my nose to lube it. Really.

That sounds funny, but I bet it works. I've always a little skin oil on the side of my nose. lol

To help the pieces come apart the "nose trick" is used.Personally I use a candle, just rub it all round the male ferrule.
I would check to see if you are trying to put the right pieces together, I would never lubricate to put them together,as you will almost certainly end up with a "one-piece"

My grandfather used to tell me to rub the ferrule on the side of your nose (like Blackmouth already said) or run it through your hair. Just enough oil to help separate the two halves later. I think it works best for metal ferrules, not fiberglass.
I know your situation, Time. I had a Diawa that was always hard to get apart. It usually took two people to separate it. A tiny touch of Vaseline helped somewhat, but eventualy I broke a couple eyes off of it.

I have a Berkley 8.5' rod that came back from Hakai once in one piece because no one could get it apart.

Once Dave from Highwater Tackle in N. Van fixed it he too recommended the nose oil trick.

That sort of worked but that particular unit needed a lot of sanding on the male ferrule before it became easy to use.

You can't really harm the rod by sanding around the ferrule not that I found it's caught a lot of Coho since and I treat my rods like tools not heirlooms.

Thanks guys.
I'll give it another light touch with emery and just a wipe or two with hair, nose, or vaseline grease and see how that works.
I had forgotten all about the nose-wiping trick. Wonder why.
If it still feels sticky I'll leave it until I'm next down in Victoria. Island Outfitters has a good repair guy in the shop I'll have look at it.
