Smelt fishing

Anyone know where you can go smelt fishing in and around Burnaby Lake? I am originally from Ontario, smelt fishing was a family tradition in the spring, would love to start going again. All I can find is info in North Van and Second Beach.

1-you need to understand the difference between saltwater & freshwater.

2-I grew up netting freshwater Smelt in northeastern Ontario but have never heard of anyone doing so anywhere in BC-Yukon maybe.

3-local saltwater Smelt populations have crashed and are hardly worth the bother anymore.

Yeah, I remember smelt fishing with my dad in Fort William (Thunder Bay) in the 60's, was great fun. Don't hear about it out here...
