What were they used with in the past? Bait, lures or hoochies? What would you use them for nowadays?

They were used with all the above in the past. I generally don't use them with bait (I'm not much of a bait guy anymore) . I use them with spoons or hoochies. The times I use them the most is in the Sockeye fishery. They work well at the slow speeds Sockeye prefer. An orange Kripple K spoon or pink mini hoochie is deadly for Sockeye trolled slow with a dodger. You can take all species of Salmon, trout, and Char using dodgers.

Also, they have far less drag than a huge full size plastic flasher (which is nice) . It's funny how things evolve. Dodgers probably stopped being popular here over 30 years ago. The biggest market for dodgers nowadays is probably on the great lakes where Pacific Salmon were transplanted to many years ago. Dodgers are still used pretty regularly in the great lakes fishery I believe.

I used dodgers with strip back in the day, I liked red packaged strip, I heard they dont make strip anymore cause it was hand done

All we used to run was herring strip. Worked well. Keep meaning to try it again. There was an article in BCO a couple years ago showing you how to make your own

My fishing buddy uses an old narrow dodger on Mabel lake when it's open for salmon. Not sure if it's the dodger or just that he's a good fisherman (he is) but he does pretty good with it. Wintertime on the same lake you can sometimes do well using a 6" dodger off the rigger, especially on darker days.

Dodgers work really well in the big lakes, like Mabel, Shuswap, Kootenay, and Quesnell. I'd say they're the most reliable way to produce catches of big fish in freshwater.
