Since everyone thinks Hali is where it's at...

personally i havent seen a decline on the south coast for me. But i guess its probably easier for fisherman to find fish what with all the technology thats available to us.

Your bang on hunter. the numbers have declined and it is with the aid of technology that we are able to keep our catches artificially high. This includes the commercial sector. As for letting big fish go it's a great idea. When we fish shallow we let the hogs go but when we fish deep we don't (1200+). I personaly feel that the big ones don't taste nearly as good as a 30-40.

Seems to me that with the increased restrictions on salmon in the last ten years a lot more fishermen are turning their attention to halibut-myself included.Ten years ago,20 halibut weighed in doesn't sound that hot,but ten years ago there was 1/10th as many anglers targeting them.Eventually(and inevitably)stocks will decline just like salmon.
We need to make sure that we be a little more responsible this time.
For that reason I'll let the big ones go.

It's a potshot that the smaller ones are females,it's pretty well a guarantee that the barn doors are females.
I'll play the odds

Hooch

What sort of techno gear are you talking about. I've used a sounder and a good anchor and that's about it and both those things have been around for years.

gps and plotters...the fish don't stand a chance. One of my buddies in PR took a group out from Alberta. He didn't think much of it when they were playing with a handheld gps. That is until the next year they showed up on his spot with their own gear.

Interesting point , I have chartered a couple of times in new areas , brought my handheld gps as well , honestly , this is why we hired the guide , told him straight out before I booked ,learn the area , mark a few holes , asked the outfit first , they said they did not mind , or , were they just being nice ?? I don't believe they will take you to there honey hole , some input from you guides, how do ya feel about this , Honestly ?

Thanks , ,, FD:)

Well, I for one have no problem with a guest bringing a GPS.

I charge a pretty good fee for what I do, and I am quite aware that some people will hire a guide for the first day of a week long fishing trip.

If I know that is what they are doing, then I change my routine a bit. Instead of fishing a known hotspot hard, I will run around and give them an overview of the entire area, fishing each spot for a short time and pointing out how to fish that spot, and what to look out for in the way of hazards.

My goal is to have them able to safely fish my area, and be able to catch a few fish to take home with them. I also try to instill in them a sense of sportsmanship and courtesy for other boaters/fishermen.

And if you think that it is a one time deal, you would be wrong. In '06 I guided a fellow from Oregon on his boat for a day. He enjoyed it enough that he took me out a second day. In '07 he went out on my boat.
