I still think there should be a maximum size restriction... anyways...a commercial harvest reduction makes sense to me.

If I look back at my years as a guide..I wish I hadn't killed those big ones..I've never had anything over 277 but I've bonked a few over 200 for the guests...I feel foolish having done so.

Fish sustainably...take the chickens.

I think that a voluntary size control would help. I have seen what taking the big spawners can do to a walleye fishery. When it is done on one lake you can see the results very quickly.:)

Honestly, that fires me right up! I seen that first one a while ago. Ive yet to get one over 100lbs, Id would bonk a 150+ pounder as a result of my competative nature. sorry...

444 lbs, that was great. As for killing it, what would I do with it? More importantly how would I get it to the dock?

fishin magician killedied the big ones his customers hooked he has had his fun dont feel bad taking a big fish if your lucky enoughto hook one especially around victoria area. that big one is why were out there spending our money and time. good luck nimo on a monsterhalli.

I can see the urge to bonk a big one and I wouldn't look down on you for doing so. I have never caught one bigger than 40 and I could not say that I wouldn't be tempted to but I really hope that I would let the barn doors go.:D

That's a cheap shot Bee.

Bee, it's pretty gutless of you to sit behind a computer screen and say that I killed the big ones which were hooked and that I had my fun. No such fun, taking a fish like that back to the lodge. 50% of the lodge hates your guts for killing it and the other 50% are kinda "Yeah, that's cool, but I'm kinda on the fence". Guests are paying guests and they call the shots--and it's not a guide's call regardless of all the education and preaching. On at least 4 of the 5 over 200 I guided I clearly remember telling the guest to let them go. All five of them were very clear---"I want that fish and we're not letting it go".

Anyways Bee, what would you know about conservation anyways?

I'm not saying I'm innocent of anything. I'm guilty of depleting the resource...and not only that...being PAID to deplete the resource and conserve it at the same time.

All users of the resource are responsible for the depletion of stocks, no matter the species.

You're probably the guy who denies global warming is an issue or has been caused by humans.

Everyone heed Bee's advice. Kill all the fish, kill 'em all, because you're lucky if you hook them and someone else will kill 'em anyways because everyone is entitled to their fun.

:(

i didnt say kill everything i said its your fish make your own decisionyou made yours. if you regret it now thats your problem. i am in front of my computer not behind it.

just a heads up...as a guide, especially working for a resort (runnin your own charter company you can make your own policies) ....its not your choice what happens with a fish....you can protest all you want...if a guest says kill it....well out comes the harpoon.

Remember one thing boy's...
There is not a concervation issue on our coast apparantly so if you want to kill one of those big breeder's, it's your choice.
The commercial guy's don't think twice about it and the fact is we as recreational fisherman don't take that many big ones out of the water in comparison.
I educate my clients about what those big fish produce and then after that...it's up to them...

Just to clarify, without commenting on ethics, my question was really a logistics issue. What would you do with a 400 lb Hali?

Although I couldn't promise that I wouldn't kill it, I think I might let it go - if for no other reason than fear[:I]. I would also give a guy a big "kudos" at the dock if I saw one that size hanging. It's friggin amazing.

as i always fish alone a halibut that big wouldnt be a problem for me. would never happen.i had trouble bringing in a 175lb. over the side

thats some big hali!!!!

"A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work"

How many people that kill a 150+ lb hali actually eat all the meat? In my experience 99% of the big ones are shi%*y eaters anyway. Let em go in my opinion.

Wow,some amazing footage! Thanks f.m The commercial harvest reduction is a great start towards conservation and I would like to see a size restriction for all sectors put in place to protect future stocks. This summer I am going to release all halibut over 60lbs.This is a way I can contribute towards conserving this magnificent fish. Some of my best memories of the larger fish 80-100lbs. we have caught this past couple of seasons has been the explosive, sounding runs back to bottom and the thrashing head shakes on the surface. What a remarkable fish! That's my 2 cents.

Sorry, that this is off topic.

No Dude that's me!

I have my own theory on the global warming issue I call it the "global re-warming" Before our last ice age the earth was warmer than it is now. Our part of the world was semi-tropical. With that being fact. Imagine if you will if you put an ice cube into a glass of water. The first half will melt slower than the second half. Once the internal temperature of the ice has risen it all melts faster. Why is everyone so surprised that the earth is re-warming itself back to pre-iceage temperatures? I've read that there was 10 times more carbon in our atmosphere in the time of dinosaurs then what we have now. IMHO it must have been a meteor, asteroid, or comet, that hit the earth and cause the last Ice Age which we are STILL recovering from. The glaciers are STILL retreating.

Back to the topic.. 400#+ is almost too big. Didn't anyone ever watch "The Old Man and the Sea"?

Take only what you need.

Hmmm , School them on the Characteristics of Large Females , then let them make the Decission , Hmmm , It's your boat , Why do they get the last say , VERY Responsible !!Look what we just went through , we were not sure if we were even going to have a opening , now that there is , We need to think Differently , this is the New Generation , QUIT thinking OLD SCHOOL !! When I have Guests out on my Boat , I make it VERY CLEAR , I release all larger Females , if we are lucky enough to get one , photos in the Water , and Released !! I'll admit , I may not keeping the little Ping Pong Paddles anymore , I will fish Selectively with Barbless Hooks, if DFO lets me !! I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking like this !! Never had any Complaints . Ethics of the Commercial Fleet !! Nothing we can do about it !! Quit thinking that they will recieve a lower Annual Quota in any near future ,last I heard , Jimmy is not hurtin for food or clothes !!, Until it happens , STOP thinking like that !! It is up to the Sporty's ,to KEEP this Fishery STRONG for the FUTURE !!! If ya haven't noticed , the banks are getting buisier and buisier every Freaking Year , Guy's are having Halibut Derby's , Outfitters have leader boards on the " Biggest " Hali of the year ,I see the amount of Newer Members ,that post frequently on this forum,Wanting to know how to catch Halibut, stocks will diminish , GUARANTEED !!If ya think not , your lying to yourself. WE NEED THE FEMALES !! We need to make more responsible decissions out there , The Bigger Females taste like Shart anyway !!

My Rant , Cheers , FD...[}:)]

IMO targeting small halibut all the time would almost be like deer hunting and shooting all the fawns at least a larger halibut has contributed years of spawning whereas a small one hasnt even had the chance to spawn. taking all the little ones could also be counter productive in the long term
