So, did it have backing on when it died? Could settle a debate from earlier this summer. I have a newish one with only a few trips on it, but I did put on some dacron.
It has nothing to do with backing there is a known flaw with a bunch of 4000 reels. Even if you and load the reel by hand Mono's memory after fighting some large and strong salmon the memory will cause the line to go back to the original everything. That is what causes the expansion that blows the spool. I have blown spools with and without backing. Don't think that this is a Shimano issue either. I have blown many of reels in many of ways. But Shimano is my #1 choice.
I fish deep 80% of the year if not more. This is not my first blow out.
