Not braided as thats spectra fiber and kinda pricy for something you just dont use and its not thick enough, use good old dacron the thicker the better I usually put a 100 yds of the thickest I can find and then put on the mono as then you leave the dacron on forever and keep replacing the mono.

With a lot of backing on the reel it is now a big cushion for your reel and it kinda forces you to replace your line after you loose a bunch of it and really thats a good thing cause after a month or more of good hard use you really dont know where all the nicks and abrasions are.
Line is cheap and you never know when that big fish will hit and you dont want to loose the fish of a lifetime because you were to cheap to replace your line now do you.

Good luck wolf

Only thing I have ever backed was a Peetz reel with the metal in the drum. Diawas, shimanos, I've never backed any of them, and never had any problems. Must be somewhat of a defect. Once I had my reel explode off the rod on a hit, and no the drag wasn't too tight, The fish was that big! as it was screaming out line up by the first eye It broke the metal that held the reel to the rod. then proceeded to porpose over towards this rock and went between two rocks and cut us off, all in all it took about 20-30 seconds. and there was no slowing this fish down. I've hooked 2 fish over 60 pounds and that was one of them! The other one was lost due to the "Gorby Grip" He saw the size of his fish the second time it jumped, then (Gorby)instict took over and he clamped his hand down on the reel! The fish jumped on his side leaning away from us and the flasher came shooting back at the boat doing 90mph! I threw out my single action reels that day and have never looked back.

Take only what you need.

Yup I run 4 GT 4000's had for about 4-5 years, I have had to replace to drum. Split. No backing. Since then no problems. Backing is the key like wolf said 100 yards of it and then mono and you are good to go. Best reel for the money. But Islanders are the kings. MR2 or MR3 I have used both and both are great. MR3 has a faster retrieve if there are seals around. LOL.

A guy at work had two Shimano's split the drum while in storage. Both were covered under warranty.

Did he have to pay the $15 fee to get new drums? - This is what Shimano charges if you mail them in to them for warranty work, and also what Tyee in CR charged me to fix mine last year.
