Hi there im going out hali fishing this weekend but i thought i would try and keep a couple dogfish if i pick them up when im out there. I was wondering if there is any recipes or way to treat them besides skinning, gutting and soaking the meat almost immediately. Also i have been interested in trying to make sharkfin soup out of the dogfish fins has anyone ever tried this?

There is a health advisory for dogfish, due to elevated levels of mercury or other contaminants. ...

There is a book called the dog fish cookbook. It shows you from catching to preparing dog fish. I have a copy.

Not for me though. Good luck,

i know its not recommended you eat the larger ones but is there high mercury content in the small ones? i have always wanted to try cooking them just to give them a try i imagine it wont be that good

I understand that they were sometimes used for fish and chips in England. They have a huge liver which was used for oil many years back.

They ARE used for fish and chips in England. We send ton of them every year over there. They are also used to make fake scallops.

There is a Korean cook book out called 101 ways to Wok your dog, maybe a good recipe in there for dogfish.:D

This dish comes from a small island off the coast of Spain, Ibiza.

Fish with hard skin such as dogfish are fried in a different way than others, due to their special flavor. First skin and slice. then marinate for some hours in lemon juice, some drops of vinegar, salt, pepper and drops of olive oil.Flour and fry. Spread over a picada of garlic and parsley. paprika, a bit of oil from the frying pan, and lemon juice according to taste.[^]

I have never tried this dish before but after living in Ibiza for a number of years I'm sure its pretty good. Just make sure you have lots of wine with it...

You must mean Hagfish, I always thought a Hagfish was Pam going back to Baywatch.:D

Tried some a number of years ago. Skin them as soon as possible and soak the fillets in water with a couple of table spoons of vinegar over night in the fridge. It's o.k. and has a fine texture . Probably best deep fried .

Have you ever wondered why MCDONALDS calles there fish burger
"FILET O FISH"
as its every fish imaginable im sure I heard it is dog fish as well.
then dont call it cod or pollack or perch hake just for those reasons it all comes down to marketing!!!!

Yes ive tried it as I had client a few years back that got excited about catching them but i told them i never cleaned one LOL
as i really havent. They were no no its ok we will clean them all as soon as we got them they gutted them skinned them chopped all the fins off all that was left was this long slab of pure white meat, then the next day they brought me a chunk to try and ill admit it wasnt bad they did it in a soya sauce with ginger, As with everything if its done right you can make anything taste good LOL

Would i ever do it NO but hey if people want to eat them all the power to them.

Ill think ill go find a recipe for road kill coon now LOL LOL
