Sharing Gear Organization TIps

I'm always looking for little tricks and tips to be better organized when I'm on the water. My feeling is fishing time is for fishing, not tying gear creating down time. So, I'm hoping others out there would be interested in sharing tips.

I'll start the ball rolling. One of my pet peaves is wasting time tying hoochies on the water. I came across these plastic file organizers at Staples, and the file jackets with tabs you can label. What I do is tie up hoochies and put them into zip lock bags then place a dozen at a time into a file jacket then file each jacket. The advantage of this system is your stuff is in a semi waterproof container (no rust issues), and when you need a particular hoochie you aren't stumbling around looking - just look inside the tabbed folder.

Any other great tips out there?

I have recently converted from the old trusty tackle box to the new Plano clear plastic containers with the tabs to make the compartment size you want , then I have divided my types of gear up and plan on storing them on their sides with a heavy duty tape on the spine with what each one contains written on it.
These will store on edge in my center well so its handy to get at yet out from under foot.

I throw all my gear loose on the dash, and into my tackle box.
Then i spend 10 minutes untangling leaders when i want to switch gear.
maybe i should get organized ??[:o)]

Good idea's !

Good idea Sea run. I don't have much gear yet but I tend to leave things where I was finished with them, (like an old farmer) except my fields aren't big enough and it tends to clutter things up. I will keep my eyes open for things to add also.

Couple of these take care of most of my tackle and they fit great under the seat.
$12 at Home Depot.

JUST FISHEN'

I cut drinking straws (slurpees straws are stronger than Mc D's) into short pieces about 2 inches long, then I roll the leaders around my fingers making a flattened loop about 3 inches long and then slide the leader into the tube. This way the hootchies lay flat and lengthwise in the drawers of my Plano as each drawer is about 8 inches long. You can have about 6 laid in each drawer. I also got 2 lengths of 1/8 inch thick plastic the width of the bottom of the box and then cut grooves to fit my flashers about 1/2 inch apart in the plastic. This way flashers are always handy and not laid atop each other.

Good eyes! It is a 30' coastal cruiser.:D

As far as using the plastic straws to contain the leader , go to a florist and ask for the heavy duty plastic ones they get for single flower arrangements , they are thick very strong and are great for containing all the large leaders on your anchovy action head hookups !
Noticed them one day when getting the wife some flowers for her birthday.

You have to go to a florist to get those straws.
No wonder I haven't seen them.:D

Yeah I hear ya , they are quite a large diameter so it is very easy to get the leader into them , when the salesperson was wrapping the flowers I noticed them laying on the work bench and asked what they did with them and if they ever threw any away , she indicated yes they do chuck them out so I volunteered to take a dozen from her , they are about 18 inches long , have use them now for over 2 years and they don't get brittle like the other straws do.

Hey, some great ideas folks. Nice thread Highliner, some good ideas there also. Keep em coming.

Yes but after you remove the straw just pull on the leader and hold for a few seconds and its fine , this also gives you the chance to look for nicks etc and if its on the brink of failure .....snap she goes and your saved a loss.

I do the same trick with the straws, but find that the hooks get fouled with one another in the Plano boxes. So what I've done is taken the styrofoam black tray that comes with your anchovies, and embed the hooks from the hootchie or teaser heads into the tray. That way the hooks don't get tangled.

At the very right side of Gypseas pic, there is a sewing organizer that you can get at Wally-mart for about $10. One of these 3 drawer units fits behind my helm seat and each drawer holds a Plano box and/or a couple of foam trays.

Ahh yes, the straw trick.Got about 3000 floating around in my boat.Great for leader management, just got to remember to put them away.
Oh yeah-I use the 7-11 slurpee straws, they're easier on your leader
