Seiners

While fishing off Sooke today, there was some huge Seiners (at least thats what I think they were) passing by us from west to east. I am curious, what have these things been out fishing.

Whatever they were, they were huge big ships with large drums on the back. Must cost a small fortune to build and run them.

Definitely sounds like hake draggers to me then.

They are huge to follow and stay on the schools of fish so that they can store large amounts before unloading and the drums are usually used to weigh the net down to the deep depths the fish are at.

I've seen them a couple times unloading at the fish processing plant here in port.

I saw a few large draggers fishing out 5th tideline in Sooke and further out in front of Sooke harbour last year. I was told they were fishing for hakes.

May have been pilchard seiners, its near the end of the season for them, may have been on the way home

Seiners could have had a dog opening at Nit Nat but Seiners are usually only 50 to 90 feet long.
