Anyone know any spots to fish for Halibut or Lings that arn't too far out that someone could help me out with!!! PLEASE!!! PM if you want to ..

I don't know about Halibut off Sooke.....but for Lings:-

Generally speaking you need to be looking for islands or islets or reefs or rocky humps that get good current /tidal action.
Anywhere from 60ft to 120ft should produce......close to the rocks/ledges/bottom.
They like hanging around structure waiting to ambush prey and sitting on ledges waiting for the current to bring them some victims they can pick off.

You don't generally find many of them over flat sand bottoms....

The past few years ive been finding more and more lings on sandy bottom around Sooke. Look even deeper then 120 i go out to about 200-220 ft then go back for another drift. Many places to fish that go even deeper then that but it can be near impossible unless at slack tide.

LOT of RCAs in sooke area be careful to not to fish in them... there closed for a reason..

I can tell you a few stories about Lings....absolute monsters.....

and they were always around rocky reefs...

If I had a buck for every big Ling I've seen on a flat sand bottom in the middle of nowhere......you'd have to lend me bus fare home.....

Hope to see you on the water..

Here is a place to start for lings and Hali in Sooke.

48deg 19.122 N

That spot is about 2.5 miles from Sooke harbour anywhere in a 10 mile radius should be worth a try some areas better then others maybe but you won't learn that without trying some spots. You don't have to travel 10 miles pick close spots if you like.

As mentioned watch for RCA's and if I were you I'd bring some beers down to the dock and try to chat with people who were on the water and having success.

Another tip instead of asking where to go research ling and halibut behaviours and try to solve the riddle of not where to go but why to go there and if you can do that you'll be well on your way.

Hey Ghost 21,

This is a spot I have marked to try on my charts. I have not yet tested it, but all the signs are there. There is a nice pinnacle, sandy bottom, and good depth. Make sure to pin up so that you're fishing the east side of the pinnacle. Let me know if you have any luck there.

It's about 4 km outside the lateral beacon at Wiffin Spit.
