Whales of Blackfish Sound
In 1994 we were plagued by seals at Norris Rock and Flora Rock off Hornby Island. We usede to fish out of Bowser Bills. I bought Whales of Blackfish Sound, produced by the Vancouver Aquarium. I dubbed the TRANSIENT MEAT EATING KILLER WHALE dialects for about 20 minutes on another tape, and when we had a fish on, we would crank the boat stereo. I had a speaker against the hull at the water line, which may have helped. Every fish was landed when the tape was playing. Every seal in 100 yards would pop their head up and start swimming away.
I gave extra copies of that tape to a few of the regulars, it worked that great. After the collapse of fishing on the inside, we shifted to Gold River, which has no seals for some strange reason.
Other people tried using bear bangers that are a short range explosive charge fired at bears on a trial by hikers. Very dangerous and I don't recommend it. It does scare the seal following the boat, and the range seems sufficient, but lets not be harrassing wildlife.
