Seal deterent??? Or money grab???

I bought a tape recording of orcas a few years back and have played it off Renfrew when Sea Lions are following me and for the most part they ignored it - wide open volumn- and kept coming. I did play it last year with a pod of orcas passing in the distance and a big male made a 90 degree turn straight for us. If the tape does work it is very slight and I believe this guys product would give similar results.

LOL! Couple things to consider...

"The Ocra-Stra works both above and below water"

Only way it's going to work above water is when the seal's head is also out of the water, and CLOSE!
I realize the world of electronics and miniaturization has come a long ways... but... As far as I understand it, it takes a pretty powerful hydro acoustic system to transmit sound any significant distance underwater. Is something the "size of a flashlight" capable?

Finally, have you ever witnessed the reaction of the FISH when a pod of orca's show up??
Methinks you won't have to worry much about losing many fish to the seals when playing Free Willy's version of Mozart! :D

Cheers,

Actually sound travels through water better than air.

But in air you can tell which direction the sound is coming from.

Underwater it is much more difficult to ascertain from which direction the sound is coming from.

When diving, and an outboard passed overhead , it was almost impossible to to tell which direction it was coming from.

The noise just gets louder and louder....from all directions.

When we dove with Sealions, which we could see a mile away....we would attract them to us by going down to the bottom and banging on our tanks with our knives. Even to us this wasn't all that loud.

But five minutes later.....there they would be....swimming around us and checking us out.

Underwater, things look one-third bigger than on land..

So these male Sealions would always look gargantuan.

I can't imagine anything worse for catching salmon..... Maybe soaking the hull of your boat with orca ****??

think you are missing the point - you would use this when you have a fish on, not while fishing! Sure everyone else won't be impressed, but at least you get your fish! I'd certainly be curious as an underwater device.

My bad...I did miss the point to some extent, I guess if you only play it when you're into a fish it miiiiight be a solution... But... Playing an Orca noise when the bite is on seems to be pretty crazy still IMHO. Worth a try I guess if seals are a considerable problem where you fish.

Or you could tow a giant inflatable lol, If it works cool but I have my doubts... probably more humane than some other tactics. As much as I dislike loosing a fish to a seal... Ive tried steering over the seal to keep him under water hoping he would eventually let go but has never panned out for me. It just ended up wasting more time. just let your drag off and let em have it and hope you get your gear back. Especially if its a one of a kind lucky lure.

cheers

Sign me up I'll try it.
Local guy that invented it here.
Few years ago we had to quit fiishing Kitty Coleman because of the seals.
Wonder if the inventor found the equivelent of " Hey look guys there's some seals over at Kitty, lets get them"
If he did and it works in the water we may have found a solution to a lot of problems.
Put one on the puntledge river in the spring and fall to chase them away.

I've seen sea lions and humpbacks exhibit signs of fear and panic at the sound of real transient orcas nearby, so I could see it being effective to some degree if it's loud enough.

Only 25 clams DW. Let us know how it performs!

Hey, in theory, it sounds totally logical. If you are in the woods and you heard a cougar scream (not a 40 year old women just to pre-empt those jokes), are you going to keep on doing what you were doing, or get the hell out of there? My only thought is perhaps this would only apply to the east coast where the transients do hang. Seals in Victoria would probably wonder WTF the south pod was up to now, whereas the seals in transient territory know the sounds to get the hell away from and would scatter!

Not like I'm a marine biologist though!

Whales of Blackfish Sound

In 1994 we were plagued by seals at Norris Rock and Flora Rock off Hornby Island. We usede to fish out of Bowser Bills. I bought Whales of Blackfish Sound, produced by the Vancouver Aquarium. I dubbed the TRANSIENT MEAT EATING KILLER WHALE dialects for about 20 minutes on another tape, and when we had a fish on, we would crank the boat stereo. I had a speaker against the hull at the water line, which may have helped. Every fish was landed when the tape was playing. Every seal in 100 yards would pop their head up and start swimming away.

I gave extra copies of that tape to a few of the regulars, it worked that great. After the collapse of fishing on the inside, we shifted to Gold River, which has no seals for some strange reason.

Other people tried using bear bangers that are a short range explosive charge fired at bears on a trial by hikers. Very dangerous and I don't recommend it. It does scare the seal following the boat, and the range seems sufficient, but lets not be harrassing wildlife.
