Scotty hp downrigger power on/off habits

picked up a set of 2106 downriggers and am wondering what everyone's habit/preference is on keeping counter powered up. Manual says counter is to stay on all the time. Seems if I power it off it resets counter to zero every time. Do most guys turn it on in the morning then power it off at end of the day or???

I turn mine off when I am done. Hold the button down for about 5 seconds. It save the counter battery I guess. If you don't touch it, it should power off after 24 hours.

They're like a digital watch display. Manual says battery life will improve if backlight function is used less.

There is a counter battery? What kind and where will I find it if I need to replace?

i believe it is inside the sealed unit. worst design ever, by the best fishing product company.

I turn mine off as part of my shut down at the dock....JAC I got a spare from scotty that sits in the bottom of my tackle box in the event of battery failure

The original counter that had no off button was junk, leaked right quick followed shortly thereafter by failure. The new one with the off button which was sent out on warranty seems better, but 1 of them is showing some moisture under the lcd, but hasn't died yet.

I assume they are putting the new counters on all new HPs... But I'm sure there's plenty of old stock out there.

The original counters were always on, the new ones power down after 24hrs. Rezeroing is a non issue. If the battery dies, you need to buy a new counter...

Ok thanks guys. Manual didn't say that they power down after 24 hours. I will probably end up powerin them off each day during clean up.

Guess I've got the origanal style counter, no off button. In year 4 with them, no problems so far. I guess I better get spares ready to go, watch batteries don't last 5 years.

such a pain in the arse i bought 2 lids and 2 counters, that way when the POS bites it again for the 6th time in 2 seasons, i just switch out the complete lid rather than having to swap out counter while fishin.
