I've had problems with my old 2-belt Scotty dropping back down after
an auto-shutoff.
Took it apart, cleaned up the brake plate, roughed up the pads & tried adjusting the handle return spring to no avail.

I know Scotty will fix it, but would like to trouble shoot this myself
any idea's ?

Jus off the top off the head but wasn't that something to do with a brake return spring[?]

That was my first guess as well, tried repositioning it
with no luck.
maybe the spring needs replacement as it's an older model
(like me ) :D

That spring is a real common problem I was able to bend mine and make it work to fix the same problem you are having. But then I took the into the store and got the FREE repair done. Took them about 10mins a rigger. Came out with new springs, brakes and wires including new plugs.

I would never trade or sell my old double belt Scotty's for the new single belt models.

might try kleening the friction pad and plate with brake kleen or solvent, if you got any wd-40 on them by chance.

the single belt scotty's work good for me now that they have the kevlar belt's on them haven't broken a belt since.

Stumbled upon this discussion and realized I have 2 double belt Scotty downriggers on my current boat - one works fine and the other tends to auto drop again after coming up and stopping - may have to take it in for repair.

One is a short boom which works fine for me. The other one is extendable boom, but it is skinnier than the newer ones, seem to bounce quite a bit if not stopped gently.

I am just curious why you would consider these better than the newer single belt models?

The pulley on these older ones is a bit of a pain as the line seems to jump off far too easily if it goes slack.

its a simple brake adjustment....9/16 open end wrench on bottom nyloc...loosen just a hair..or tighten it.......your cable or braid should pull out with brake fully engaged under pressure..DO NO TIGHTEN THE TOP NUT IT ONLY SUPPORTS THE HANDLE......NEVER SPRAY WD 40 . BRAKKLEEN OR ANY OTHER LUBE, DEGREASER ANYWHERE ON YOUR RIGGERS....VOIDS THE WARRANTY AND SCREWS UP EVERYTHING ELSE....IF YOUR BRAKE PADS ARE CONTAMINATED, GO TO ANY SHOP THAT IS A SERVICE CENTER AND PICK SOME UP...THEY ARE FREE ANYWAY....
