Salt Water Fishing Licences

I just received a call from DFO saying that our hard copy licences will not arrive until Mid April. I asked why and they said that with the new changes the licences had to be re printed. DFO knew the change was coming 2 months ago and if they have already printed the licences and now need to do a re print, think about the costs incurred.

If this is true, I guess everyone will be receiving their licence package late and anyone needing a licence in the first two weeks of April will have to buy them on line.

Anyone else get the same call or receive their licence package for this year???

This again??? DFO is such a mess it's march 18th I should be able to buy my 2013/14 license at my local tackle shop and online but I can't get either.

Planning a trip to BC to fish April 1st? You may or may not be able to get a license. DFO site just says check back late march" doesn't even give a specific date when you can buy it and we are two weeks away from needing it. Same thing last year couldn't get your licence until just before April 1st.

Didn't the last time this happened they extended the previous season licence?

I spent some time on the phone with DFO today on this matter. Electronic licenes will be avaiable, but possibly no hard copy paper until mid April, hopefully sooner. Elecronic license for US residents does'nt allow them to fish for Hali, in 121, 23, 123, if purchased on a home PC. Some commercial venders can now issue electronic licenses to US residents that are valid for Halibut and soon all license venders should be able to do this. I will have a list soon. Someone in Ottawa thinks we should do away with paper totally, but remote places with no internet can't do this. Reguardless of how it plays out, you will be able to be licensed and go fishing.
I was told, it's there screw up and my clients will be able fish and will not be arrested no matter what.

It's not a problem for most unless you are a charter operator and you have charters in the first 3 weeks of April - like we do!! I spent some time on the phone with Fisheries this morning and voiced my concern over this. They have no intention of extending the current license year. They say have them go on line and get one! Our clients are mostly out of Country and are hotel bound. Doesn't work for us. Hard to say what we and other Winter/Spring charter operators will do. My 2 cents worth.

I agree 100 %.

I have a charter April 1st. The people fly in Sunday night March 31st and they are staying at a cabin in Sooke with no internet. Should they buy them before the leave home in AB, Should I buy they on line for them, will the weather be acceptable to go out on the 1st? No refunds for any of us.

Doug do you (or they) have a smart phone? Once licenses are online you can use most cell phones to buy it. Ideal? No. But it should work for most people. Others might need to find some free wifi or something.

I still feel not having the licences available right now both online and in paper form is a failure and it shows DFO does not learn from their mistakes because they pulled this same crap last year

Edit: just remembered if you buy on your phone and can't print it then recording your catch will be difficult. At least you'll have a license though. Not a very good solution I guess since recording your chinook/halibut is a big part of the regs.

Hotels all have internet access that's not an issue nor is buying one from a non-coastal province.

I'm doing a charter with Wolf in a few weeks and I expect my crew will all have licences none of them was born yesterday.

Not all accommodation have internet (have you been to Sooke) and not all clients coming to the dock have pre purchased licences.
I sell over a dozen licences per year to other charter operator's clients who don't come to the dock with a licence. Wolf's clients have purchased numerous licences from me in the past due to his client not having access to the internet or forgetting.

Paper makes it easier for me and when it all goes to on line licence purchases only, I will be selling the Skagit Orca, Gear, client lists........... maybe sooner while I only have under 250 Hrs on the 300hp and 2.8yrs warranty remaining.

Good luck fishing with Wolf it will be a great time...

I'm gonna look into the smart phone purchase. Take my chances with recording on a paper license (I will for sure have one). Thanks for that info by the way! For me it's just the total BS factor that we don't need. Maybe on the water enforcement will lay off for the first few weeks as they know the license screw up!!

[TD="colspan: 2"]This notice supercedes FN0217. The following information applies for 2013-2014 Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licences: The 2013-2014 electronic Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licences are currently available on-line to the public or through vendors with on-line portals. Electronic licences are available only in a standard letter size format and only available at participating vendor locations. Manual hand written licences will be available during the third week of April. Unfortunately, this printing and distribution delay is a result of adding important licence conditions for halibut management. The 2013 manual Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence will be larger in size than those issued in recent years. A list of current vendors may be found at: http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/licence-permis/Vendors-vendeurs-eng.htm For non-residents who wish to fish for halibut in Areas 23, 121 or 123, you must acquire a licence from a vendor in Canada. Refunds will not be issued for on-line licences, so please ensure your licence selection is correct before you complete your transaction. If you are a vendor and wish to use the new public access portal to issue licences or try a test version of the system, please contact Vivian Chow at 604- 666-3160 or vivian.chow@dfo-mpo.gc.ca . If one from the U.S. buys a license from a vendor in Canada at a time when only the online license is available, is it still the case that such a license cannot be used to fish for hali in Areas 23, 121 or 123?

A quick fix for most of us charter guys would be for DFO to allow 2012 day licenses (only) to be sold and be valid up until most vendors have their 2013 supply available for sale. You would fill out date sold and valid just as any other. Being valid for only one day it wouldn't effect annual license sales with the right license and the recorded halibut catch portion.

Best contact DFO for an answer to that. Email address is supplied with the notice.
