Rogers satellite to mobile service

Has anyone tried this? How’s the service? Heard mixed reports, mostly about texts not going thru in a timely manner. I’m looking into getting starlink but Roger’s at 15 bucks a month has me thinking…I really don’t need internet while out of service, just need the ability for people to get a hold of me.

Used it this past summer while up in Canada's north, far from any cell service. This was while the service was offered "free" for trial. It worked flawlessly. It was interesting for me to be able to have a conversation (albeit a bit slow) via text message with the family. Certainly an added piece of mind. All you had to do was choose the service on your phone, follow the satellite via a strength bar on your phone, and text as normal. If you lost the satellite or lost line of sight, the text wouldn't go through. The conversation was two sided. I could send a text and receive a reply. I also received any other texts that were incoming with no issue.

One thing to note, although it was offered as a free trial, it was up to the customer to "opt out" once it was activated. Failing to do so by Oct 31st meant that Rogers would charge you automatically going forward. I believe the free trial has been extended to Dec 8th now.

I did end up opting out when I got back from my trip, and was told that I could re-activate and pick and choose what months were best for me, but the cost would be a bit higher (to cherry pick). I may be mistaken, but it was something like $5-10 higher per month to pick and choose versus keeping the option on my plan going forward (which was around $15 as noted).

I think it's a game changer.

I used it this summer a fair amount. Works pretty good. Also Roger’s service range is so good I’ve found, I have 5g all the way across the strait.

Thank you, that’s exactly what I’m looking for. Will give it a try.

My experience with rogers is there are plenty of dead spots on the straits, including off the sandheads oddly enough. The inlets like desolation, toba, jervis and bute leave me off the grid soon as I tip in, while most of the Strait on the east side anyway is ok around the Sunshine Coast.

I'm fine with it tbh, nice to have some time away from the real world but the safety factor this service provides is great.

If you switch on the wifi calling feature on your phone and connect to starlink you actually get better reception then you do in town and you get it anywhere. Starlink switches it to the carriers. It's pretty amazing. Literally need one in the truck in town these days. The cell phone towers are overloaded. Bit of cost up front but worth it.

I got Starlink Roam this summer as I work remote in IT.
It’s a game changer. Run it off my 12 volts with an adapter. Pretty low power consumption.
52GB per month at $70 per month by the month. 200Mb download speed. Lightning fast.
If you don’t want to use it you have to pay a $7 per month standby fee.
However standby is still 500 kbps which is enough for wifi calling, texting, and light browsing.
The antenna is the size of a magazine and completely water proof and portable. So you could use on the boat and then unplug and take camping with you.
Mounts perfectly on a stainless rod holder

I did the same thing and I can say one thing. Game changer.

I will say and give this advise to new users. Set it up with the app. Not online. Also do not whatsoever call tech support. They will try and charge you 300 dollars and if you don't agree they will disconnect your sat antenna. If this happens all you have to do is hard reset with the button on the antenna itself. Puts it back to factory programming. And you can redo it. Beware of scamming people in other countries. They have the contract. If you call them you get connected to somewhere that is not here and they want your money.

Man you have your boat dialled! $7 a month with the ability to turn it up is pretty good. What’s a heavy usage 200gb or large package cost per month?

For the roam package you can get 52GB for $70 a month and unlimited for $140. Its by the month so if you turn it off it goes into standby mode at $7 per month.
Its more of a safety thing for me. I can get weather reports and current conditions, and of course fishing reports.
52Gb is about 24 hours of HD movies. If you go over its billed at about $1 a gig. The app shows you your current monthly usage so you can see where you are at.
I'm seeing them on a lot of boats now

helped my son install the roam star link on his new to him boat, we re and re the old outdated sat tv antenna from it and put the starlink antenna up there.
Hes got the same plan as SirReel mentioned.

Boat is moored 24/7 so he also installed numerous cameras everywhere on it, forward and rear facing, couple in engine room, in living areas, at helm..can check on them from anywhere in the world.
Then the added safety when out on it where cell service is non existent, no need for dvd movies while at anchor with Netflix service ect ect
Dam he and his sweetheart are spoiled these days

Just curious. Do you need to be stationary to use Roam or can you use it while underway? Incredible the advances in tech these days. Seems like every year something changes that was inconceivable just a short time ago.

Yes you can use it in motion, all inland waters and up to 12 miles offshore
Let’s go Elon 😝
