Roche Harbor Salmon Classic Invitational lures anglers to fish and good weather
Posted by Mark Yuasa

The Roche Harbor Salmon Classic Invitational ended today (Feb. 6), and while the number of fish caught wasn't as good as expected everyone took advantage of the nice spring-like weather and clam water.

A total of 100 boats with 346 anglers plied the San Juan Islands for a chance to bring home $25,000 in cash prizes.

During the two days, 43 fish were caught.

Raymond Francois of Mt.Vernon hooked his 14.6 pound hatchery chinook on the first day and never relinquished the lead, and took the $10,000 cash grand prize.

Neal Kamrin of Bellevue took second place with a 15 pound, 13 ounce fish for $5,000. David Arnold of Ferndale placed third with a 15 pound, 12 ounce fish and $3,000 in cash.

Scott Veitz brought home $2,000 for his fourth place 15 pound, 11 ounce fish, and fifth place of $1,000 went to Richard Price of Ferndale with a 14 pound, 12 ounce fish.

Matthew Rose of Bellingham earned $2,000 with a 5 pound, 4 ounce mystery fish drawing.

Largest boat total weight went to the Bellingham team of Mike McAuley, Kirk Hawley and Pat Phillips with a total weight of 26.10 pounds, and $2,000 in cash.

Peyton Moss, age 11, of Bend, Ore. Received the youngest angler award. Jen Johanson of Mukilteo won the drawing for an entry into the 2011 Salmon Classic Derby.

Jennifer Payne of Friday Harbor got a $500 check for the women's largest catch in the derby a 10 pound, 2 ounce fish.

Ya, that kind of confused me too [?]

Could it be that the first place was the biggest Salmon and 2nd place was a Lingcod or something other than a Salmon?

But, ya, most likely typo.
