Rennell sound road

From what I have heard the road washes out in the fall sometimes. just wondering how it faired this year. planning on going in july and want to make sure it will be possible. also heard the owner of the road to the one camping area may not keep it open. any info on this would help me out. may have to book into queen charlotte city or up in massett if fishing rennell isn't possible. will be launching a 23ft so will need a decent launch. any insight or info on fishing out there would be great. havn't been out there in a long time and it was on a charter. would way rather do the beach camping in rennell than run the narrows everyday so im crossing my fingers that it can happen this summer.

I drove on that road down to Rennell Sound a few years back. Pretty long bumpy road for an hour drive from QCC and before entering the bay of Rennell Sound, there is very long steep gravel road straight down to the bottom. What concerns me the most, the bigger boat and the trailer s weight could pull your vehicle down the hill with no tractions. go slow down the long steep road. I saw a large loaded logging pacific western truck going by in a narrow road and also, I had seen a bear running across to a creek.

fishing at Rennell Sound was truly impressive with halibut and springs in early June and I enjoyed it very much.

i also have driven the road into Rennell Sound, thats a pretty steep hill with a good left at the bottom. i wouldn't take a heavy boat down the hill unless it had electric brakes. the fishing was great while we where there. 225-250lbs hali off tartu point (indians head) 200' water. good supply chicken's around shield (lol we where catching 20-30 lb springs by accident) we where there at end Aug. good supply of tuna. We did the trip with 14' lund/ 25hp and a freezer. one of my best trips

You'll have to launch your boat everyday as there is minimal dock space and the local boom boats use it almost exclusively. 23 ft is pretty big boat for that hill- I would launch in qcc and send the truck with the empty trailer to meet the boat in rennell. Lots of effort to fish there. I would definitely think about staying closer to home where the fishing is just as good and more amenities. Ferry is not cheap.

The road is passable at present, but it's very possible that it will wash out between now and July. That said, there's active logging on a regular basis, so the Forest Service has a strong interest in keeping the road open.

Your biggest concern would be the hill. It's an unrelenting steep grade on an often-washboard loose gravel surface. I've taken smaller (16-18') boats down many times, and it's fine as long as you have good low range, but taking a big boat down is going to be an adventure. Regardless of what the owner of the road into Shields Bay does, there are other camping options right at the bottom of the hill. Launching options are very weak for a boat that size, though.

The option of motoring around from QC City is certainly doable, given weather, but if it blows, going around Hunter Point is no joy ride, and you'll burn mucho fuel on that long round trip.
