Been hearing some pretty good reports from Renfrew over the past few days.

Excellent spring salmon fishing off Logan Creek, into the 20s and maybe one 30 pounder.

Lots of halibut out towards Carmanah and Swiftsure, some decent size. A couple of slower days, then once found them couldn't keep them off...same old story!

Super crabbing in the bay.

Notice the "out towards Carmanah and Swiftsure" comment?

Hear's a tip that I shouldn't get yelled at for sharing? That area is mostly "gravel/sand" bottom! The trick to Swiftsure is stay out of the "mud" bottom areas and in the sand/gravel! :D

If you look at your charts... and draw a line 225 degrees from the Carmanah light to the Swiftsure closure, "north" of that line will have mostly gravel/sand/rock bottoms... south will be mostly mud! Just fish the gravel/sand and look for any of the "humps"!

I have had most of my luck out more towards Swiftsure, but if you really want to fish closer to Carmanah, just find the gravel/sandy bottoms. If you happen to run a heading of 265 degrees, 4nm off the light, you'll probably find a small hump - it shows on the charts. Depending on your tides the water will go from 145/150 feet down to 190/200 back up to about 165/175 feet. That is probably the area I would fish? I bet you will find a nice gravel/sandy shoal there, also! [:I]

Not quite rite this time charlie those spots have fish but not many this time of year.

I'm not going to say beccause there in only one little spot rite now but i'd try some place west of there.

Oh ya i get lots of fish in the mud i think more in mud then anywhere just a little hint.

Renfrew is great right now if you know where to find halibut, and how to catch them this time of year, but it's not the time of year to be throwing random jigs at them on Swiftsure, they are in close, not spread out, and amicable to a specific fishing techniques, that is, anchoring, bait and currents.

They are in a small area right now, and can just "dissapear" like that, then it's back to the spring grind which is generally the norm for Renfrew, I'd put good odds on the wheels coming off of the fishery at the May Long Weekend, then coming back in late June per usual.

I may be wrong, but that is the pattern since about 2004 for me, great March until mid May, then grindy untill late June, then bloody decks till Sept. It's why I moved my Renfrew season to later in the year, but there are allways exceptions to every pattern.

Salmon on the other hand sounds like it's been great.

Shesh... I get yelled at for for giving exact locations and corrected when I give general locations! :D

Did you miss the,"Notice the "out towards Carmanah and Swiftsure" comment?" and the, "I have had most of my luck out more towards Swiftsure".

I agree with Last Chance... but if I were to target them, which I probably and surely would I'd probably be headed start at, none other than the "Chicken Ranch"! If on the north boundry of the closure, I would be in about 170 feet of water, drifting over where that "mud spot" - turns to "sand"!! Yes, I know exactly where it is! :D I would also be there about an hour before slack and ready to back troll, since I don't like to anchor!

Or, just follow a boat called "No Bananas"! I hear from a fairly reliable source, he is pretty good at getting on the fish! [:0] :D

argh, Kelly gives a reality check to get in the way of office guy's Monday fish dreaming!

The fishing gods do not smile on the weekend warrior ... have to commit to going immediately when the fishing is HOT, the fish won't usually wait until you're ready to go. Ah well, fingers crossed they hold into the weekend.

But yes, salmon sounds pretty good right now too....and if nothing else, a pretty good chance the crab trab will have some goodness on the way in.

Was up in Renfrew on Saturday and hit 2 salmon around low tide, 1 29 pounds the other 21 pounds. That was it all day. Didn't see many getting caught. Went to the old reliable spot and got into 3 halis in just under a half hour 51, 37, and 30 pounds. Good weather all day. I hope the salmon fishing will pick up soon.

Looking to pickup some yellow eye this weekend in addition to the Springs. Heard Cerantes Point is good for groundfish, is this correct or should i point myself out to the bank?

Groundfish? The Bank? Nahhh, unless you go all the way to the Northwest Corner. What you do is either go east to Providence Cove, or west to Carmanah. A Berkley Power Grub on a spreader bar anywhere 80-250 feet of Carmanah, or any style cod jig of PRovidence Cove should have your boat to the decks wtih groundfish in no time.

Thanks, LastChance!
My old man has not had any fresh snapper/yellow eye before and I thought we'd try it since we are already heading up to Renfrew.

Kelly partially nailed it with his long weekend prediction ... seems the salmon run that was giving everybody lots of fun last week passed through, or maybe just a slow day from the low pressure system. Very few salmon caught yesterday, and none for us. Hopefully just a blip day, or maybe the next run will be arriving soon.

Halibut was decent, out Carmanah-way.

Rainy in am, beautiful sunny weather in pm. Looked to be a bit of the usual long weekend camping gong show up there, with a police road block at the town entrance.

Monday was very good for feeders - caught our limit by noon. I think the columbians are starting to come as well because we picked up a short round fattie. :)

Could not find the yellow-eye though :(
