Boat over turned coming into the river in high surf. some surfers got 2 of three in on their boards and the third was taken off the overturned hull by another boater. You have to hug the shore and follow a wave in, right behind it to be safe.

Just saw that report too on CHEK news ... a bit weird, as I think at one point they said it was Wednesday ... which would make sense, as there was big surf Weds. But why would it not be reported til today?

Nobody died so it say on the shelf until they had a real slow news day.

I guess ... just seems odd we wouldn't have heard about it til now.

Though the guy interviewed is a semi-pro surfer who lives in Tofino, and the interview looked like it was on Chestermans (not in Renfrew). My guess is they were filming surf in Renfrew earlier this week, but didn't send in the tape until they got back to Tofino. Who knows.

But in any case ... anyone know these guys or know more about what happened? Assume they lost their boat ... but happy to be alive I guess.

Well believe it or not I was invited on that trip a really close friend of mine set it up with a a guy from the island and well fortunately I cancelled due to work, for once work was a good thing.Anyways i personally have never been to renfrew I love to fish nootka and ukee bamfield. The skipper has been going there for over 20 years so he was really experienced at going out and in the river they had been out the day before,My buddy told me that it was very big water that day and they were hugging the bank but came up on a sand bar suddenly. They stopped the wave behind them picked the back of the boat up my friend being in the back got thrown all the way to the front of the boat cracking two ribs on the dash. Then came complete disaster when the next was a rouge and actually picked the boat up from the back and flipped it over instantly on to the house I believe it was a 22ft aluminum not sure what make, well two out of the three basically swam out of the boat only to be grabbed by the current and taken out to sea the skipper managed to get out and climbed on top of the vessel then got rescued from a local who had been watching the whole thing unfold. My buddy and a friend from work were rescued by a surfer, thank god they were there that day, they told my bud that they had been surfing for the past 3 days and had not seen a wave that big!!!! It was a pure miracle that nobody died.I feel super bad for the boat owner as he did lose his boat and gear that was unreplaceable as we all know as boat owners. There was a god that day and it was in the shape of a surfer and a board if anyone knows how to get ahold of these guys can you send me a message with their contact info so I can pass it onto my freind thanks in advance!!!

Passed by my bud's shop yesterday...there was a young guy buying some ceramic supplies, said he lived in J R.We said u must be a surfer dude. That led to the story about the floundering fisherman...as he watched the event unfold he doned his wetsuit grabbed his long board & paddled out to rescue one of them.He was very humble about the ordeal,me i think he deserves a medal... :0)

I once rescued a couple of would-be anglers from Alberta just after I stopped to check the surf at the mouth of Muir Creek on my way home from JR. I was still wearing my wetsuit so grabbed my board and paddled out to where they were floundering around next to their overturned 14' tinny. Got them ashore and gathered up everything I could for them.
I've "assisted" a few kayakers too when they'd get into trouble in the rivermouth at JR.
I read that one of the rescuers at Renfrew recently was Raph Bruhwiler, from Tofino.
They couldn't have been in better hands as he's one of the top surfers and watermen in Canada.
I used to surf there a lot back in the early '80's, mostly by myself too, although my wife was usually on the beach watching.
Glad those guys were saved ok.

Take care.
