Renfrew slowing down?

Hey, first post here. I'm looking at dragging the old girl to Renfrew for my first time on
August 30th for the weekend. Will the springs have started to slow down by then? Am i better off staying at Beechie Head/Trap Shack at that time? Thanks!

Dont think you would do any better at either place. Still a good time of year to catch at both locations. Can always hit Swiftsure for Coho and Halibut with some Spring action too.

Thank you. I'm moored at cheanuh, so it would be a bit of a production for Renfrew...but at least my girlfriend (fishing partner) would be committed to a solid weekend of fishing out there ;)

I've always wanted to try the bank, but I'm a bit nervous about the water and the run, and i don't know how to fish out there. I understand it's different depths and gear than beechie head would be?

What kind of boat do u have I'm going up there that weekend staying at galligers fish camp 100 per night with moorage would like to do a bank day I think maybe we could buddy boat out there

22 seasport. engines been flawless recently, but she's over 1000 hours, so i like to be cautious. Would really love to pick up a hali...

As a victoria/Sooke fishermen I always do better here then when I go to renfrew. Good luck - can be good fishing there but the grass usually isn't greener.

Excellent halibut fishing out of cheanuh or any launch from Sidney through Sooke. Put in the time you'll get em without a bank run.

Got skunked on a short trip last weekend, and sort of got sad about the end of the big ones coming soon, and thought i should give renfrew a shot, as i haven't fished there. seems logical that it would taper off there first near the end, although i don't know if that's the case. part of it is trapping my girlfriend out there with noithing to do but fish hahahah

It sounds like you should go based on the last sentence about your girlfriend. Renfrew has a couple rivers that can produce BIG fish so your not entirely correct about it tapering off first - for Fraser fish that makes sense but their own runs should be showing now or soon. Seen a tyee taken in the coho derby (early October) so you never know.

Personally I've fished labour day weekend there 3 times one year was good the two others sucked. This was going back maybe 3 years ago vowed not to go there for the labour day derby again as its poorly run for a guy who isn't staying through monday (derby ends sunday).

Swiftsure Bank can be pretty amazing fishing on its day, definitely worth experiencing, and not really that far of an adventure trip for Victoria/Sooke folks.

I don't know you or your seamanship, but it's out there ... got to have your ducks in a row, all safety systems in place, redundancies, etc. You have plenty of boat for offshore, but have to watch the weather and if things aren't looking good, be willing and able to call the day quits ... sometimes you can't tell how snotty it is until you get out there, wind and swell are predictable, but the current can make it awful ... hard to know.

Lots of tips in the archives of this forum for fishing out there. Search for the coordinates of the Chicken Ranch ... the area around there and towards J Buoy would be good enough for halibut and salmon fishing on a given day. Drift for halibut, and deep trolling for salmon with spoons or plugs. (150-200') Best of all, IMHO, when the coho are thick, non stop surface action ... an annoyance when targeting springs, but I love it....turn off the motor, put on a jig, loosen the drag, and have some fun!

You need to program the coordinates of the closure into your chart plotter so that you can be sure you're not drifting into the closure. You'll see the pattern when you get out there, motor to edge of chicken ranch, drift through, pull gear and do it again....can pretty much follow the crowd.

And if all that's too much, The Beach can be super good on its day too. Worth experiencing even if just for something different. You tend to fish shallower than Sooke, 25-40 feet, so when a big one hits, it is right on the surface already....awesome fights.

Crabbing in San Juan Harbour can be very good but tends to get fished out in Aug. For other stuff, can check out sea lion rock at carmanah and nearly always see humpbacks somewhere offshore.

Good luck out there!
