Been using that set-up on the charter rig for three years now.
It is a very convenient system to steer with, as you can do so from anywhere on your boat.
The downsides I have encountered thus far:
- The cord is the "weak link". It gets in the way a good deal of the time, gets stepped on etc. And the rubber coating the cord is wrapped in is VERY susceptible to UV deterioration. VERY! We've replaced the cord about twice a season due to that very factor. And of course we have requested that they come up with something a little better to prevent the coating from rotting out so fast and exposing the multiple sets of wires to the elements. Thus far, no satisfaction...
- The keypad failed once, likely due to getting accidentally soaked.
- The main steering cable has broken once. Easily replaced.
- The motor drive failed once. Had to be taken off the boat and into the shop. They didn't rebuild it, they replaced it.
Overall I like the convenience, even with the above noted shortcomings. If you decide to go with this, I'd suggest really looking after the cord well. As for me, I do believe we'll find a wireless version for the future...
Cheers,
