refinishing spoons

I've got a bunch of old coyote spoons that are in bad shape. Anybody ever repaint them? Is there a trick to rebending them?

I've never done it but I don't think it would be that tough. Just clean em up good and rebend them and then paint. I don't know what paint to use but I'm sure it can't be too tough. It would be fun.

By the time you procure the paint, paint them and redo them, you really have to ask yourself a question...how much are these spoons really worth? I bought out all the old stock in the best colours (Made in the USA) I could find locally in Vancouver. I've since taken to fishing other brands of spoons which have not "captured" the market in the way that Coyotes had. Some of the made in China Coyotes are ok...just be sure to chuck the hook away first, then put a Stainless 3/0 Siwash on there. Any of the painted ones, (other than the blue/green half and half and the Party Girl) are total crap and they're not worth the money.

Keep in mind we're not talking about precious shovel nose Lucky Louies or "bar none this the best Tomic I've ever used" Plugs here-- which should be treated like gold.

One thing you can do is locate the "old stock" Coyote spoons and give them a couple of coats of high gloss clear nail polish and then heat them up pretty good with a hairdryer. This will seal and protect the finish somewhat. Let them sit for a couple of weeks before fishing. The Coyotes were a great lure in the box, however I'm not optimistic that we'll ever have these Coyotes back as we knew them.

In the meantime, I'm finding some of the locally produced alternatives (ie West Coast of Canada/USA) to be EXCELLENT. They have the correct finishes/paints and come with stainless steel hooks!

I guess old habits die hard....I caught alot of fish over the years with those spoons and the new ones are definitely crap. I should try some new spoons, what brand/colour would be good for inside waters. I still might try repainting a few for fun. You gotta have a "lucky lure" for the slow days.

I have redone a few of my spoons in the past , during off season , I kept it simple , tape up the O-Ring and hook as best as you can ,and back chrome , use a razor to get clean cuts. I went to a Craft Shop( Michaels ) , bought some common colors , some glitter ,fine paint brushes, clear urethane or varnish, to finish !!

I know it is time consuming , but , what else to do during the Winter down times, get a half sack , have at er. My most successful one , Bought glow paint , painted 2 or 3 coats of glow (Rust-Oleum, 200 ml. Home Depot ) let dry , then , painted half ( lineal length ) Flourescent green , when dry , put a 1/4 in yellow eye closer to the top , when dry , a tiny red dot in the yellow eye , when dry , a coat of clear , when still wet , a sprinkle of haze glitter , one more coat of clear after the glitter phase dried , WALA , one of my favorite go to's , WCVI ,Looks like a " Glo Flo " with an eye !! Sounds like a Chick thing to do , Nice catching on a lure that you can kinda say, you designed , others i painted work quite well as well , hard to toss them away !! I here ya !!...My 2 Bits

Cheers , FD...:)

I've spray painted some older Coyotes with glo white/glo purple they work fine but they weren't all bent out of shape though those I pitch overboard.
