Rant On Guys That Steer Boats...Or Think They Are....Or Not.....

So I'm going towards a boat trolling.....he is coming at me trolling. Still off quite aways.

So I elect to steer starboard and he will then pass me on the port side.

As soon as I steer starboard, he, a half a minute later, steers to my starboard.

So I again correct course and steer to my port and then I will pass him on his starboard side.

But wait.....no...now he is steering to my port.......

God , I'd like to know what makes some people tick.........

This happened to me three times in the same day off Nan. yesterday.......

Another boat I looked at there was nobody steering....the boat was underway....but the three guys were all out back screwing around with tackle.....

Rocket propelled grenade sounds like a fix for that. :)

Hey Seafever, at least this happened to you on the water, the other day I had some Jackass cross the center line on the highway (coming at me), with his F@#%ing head down texting on his damned cell phone. I wasn't far from being dead because of this idiot.
But hey I do hear and know your frustration, the Sockeye fishery is usually really bad for this, and when there is so many other boats out there, the goof that forces you off course, usually pushes you into someone else's path.
As the saying goes,,, It takes all kinds, to make up the human race.

RIGHT rod to shore.... is the rule of thumb but dont expect it......

OK Wolf, you had to expect this one... if you are fishing in the Georgia Straits (Salish Sea) it could be argued that there is a shore on BOTH sides of you:p. (JOKE)
Just sayin because you know that we obviously aren't dealing with the brightest bulbs if they can't even steer a boat.;)
Which rod is the right rod?? because when we are looking at the rods, we are looking out the back of the boat.
Stupidity really has no limits:rolleyes:.

Off Nanaimo guys troll in all sorts of different directions......so they are not necessarily parallel to shore for the most part......unless they are right in tight to Neck/Rocky Point etc.

I just relax and get out of the way...figure someone's gotta be the bigger man. Only time I get ***** is when guys don't give enough room when you're playing a good fish. My old man on the other hand, now there's an uptight dude behind the wheel...bitching about what everyone else is doing all the while doing it twice as bad to others ;)

A few years back when I was guiding out of cruisers, lots of times I would have someone
steer the boat if I had to go to the back to tend the lines. Maybe, just maybe you were
looking at a rookie operator? Cruiser guides lets hear your thoughts. ............BB

I was having trouble with my kicker not idling the speed i wanted, had to keep going back to the kicker to adjust, Hope i wasn't the culprit, i found out later that the reason i couldn't keep the kicker at the right speed was because i had a hole in my squeezeball, fixed now! should be able to speed more time at the wheel now, I dont now how some guys can run two rods trolling by themselves...
:p

I often fish 2 rods by myself and hope I don't owe anyone any apologies for poor steering while setting gear or playing fish. When playing a larger fish I do not bring up my other set of gear but steer in a circle throttle back keeping the fish out the side of the boat tit hit on. I play the fish slowly to insure when it reaches the side of the boat it does not have enough energy left to head for the other down-rigger. It works for me I have landed some pretty big fish using this method. This of course does cause some pretty erratic steering at times. It has been my experience that most guys seeing me by myself give lots of leeway. Then of course there is the odd boneheaded mistake, however...

I don't do that anymore I find larger springs usually strike very close to shore and when you fish a crowded area as I do it is brutal having a big fish on and screwing around trying to pop off other rod.... Biggest boated last year alone was about 28 lbs.... When you do that alone you don't have the luxury of reeling other rod in fast.....I tried it last year a couple of times and lost a few large fish by just leaving other line down.... Its also easier to as you can turn out quite quickly if you hook up from a crowded spot....Nothing more maddening than being cutoff by another boat and losing your tackle and the fish....

I think your OK on the smaller fish it just when you get those big ones it you just want no chance of anything getting in the way..... If your in open area I think you have better control its just the close in crowded situation....

Sometimes I do use two rods a simply pop off other line off the down rigger so it comes up to surface, bring in ball. But only when I got the place to myself that seldom happens..... For coho it works OK and other fish but not fishing close to shore.

Don’t fish alone anymore for safety and medical reasons and increasingly for the reasons you outline when trying to handle a boat, gear and play a big salmon while in tight on land and structure with a lot of boats around you. We call it fishing the zoo. In that situation I let those with me play the fish while I look after the boat and gear and try and make some room to play the fish by getting away from other boats. I prefer to steer the boat myself in those situations which means I play less fish. I suspect that is common for boat owners unless you have a good crew you trust absolutely with the boat in a crowd.

There is a greater sense of accomplishment fishing alone getting those big double headers and getting in both but those days are behind me.

When another boat has a big one on I try to give them room, keep track of where their fish is and not cut it off but when the boat are wall to wall it’s not always easy to get out of the way (turn) and cutting speed to minimal headway may help or even pulling up your gear if you can’t get out of the way because of tight packed boats.

Sometimes you have to yell fish on and wave them off but that is something I save for big fish, not 5lb salmon. The opportunities are getting fewer for a 25 + where I fish and we should all give each other every courtesy when there is a big one hooked up. I have been lucky at Sooke in recent years and not had a fish cut off, but I will yell if someone is oblivious or pretending to be because they have not caught a big one in years and have convinced themselves there must be another big one right under the fish we are playing. The most risk to getting cut off seems to be when you have had a big one run and it is way out back of the boat with the zoo all around you.

Have to say I have a great deal of respect for the guides who have all newbie’s in the boat playing a big one in a zoo while they are having to do everything else and coach them at the same time.

I always thought the salmon peeling my line out making the clicking noise was the international symbol for G.T.F.O.O.M.W. Get The Fudge Out Of My Way!.. doesn't works over the hump in the parking lot though. I dont idle the motor back though because towing them around seems to wear them out better i find..my .02

What is a right and left side of a boat? Never heard of it.....

My old Partner (retired troller) had a saying for those Idjuts at the controls...

Hey! You MUST have taken the boating course eh? Obviously you had to be taught 'cause I don't believe ANYONE is born that effing STUPID!

At the top of his lungs that is! LOL!

Cheers,
