R3EF MOOCHING REELS?

Don't think so.

No matter what reel you get make sure that you can parts for it. There are a lot of reels that parts are not available for and I can not source parts for no matter how much/ little you paid. Another option is the Coast reel. Its also made on the island like islanders and I have been able to get parts when/ if needed.

Trophy XL's are extremely good value. My buddy fishes them 80-100 days a year for the last 5-6 years and have held up very well, will a little bit of maintenance.

Yeah I have had mine for years. I think Wolf said he got 8 years on one of his reels, and still going. These reels are from same designer of Trophy.

One thing they have other other is the free spool which I prefer.

I got a Trophy a year ago after using and liking them on charters. I like the free spool option as well, perfect for old school stuff like mooching live herring or bucktailing.

In the downrigger it doesn't line creep like my MR3. As much as I respect Islander for their leadership, I think I'll get a second Trophy XL and sell the MR3. That will pay for the new reel and.leave a good chunk of change.

I have a trophy. Didn’t like it at first until I took it apart and put some oil on the drag like your are supposed to an islander. Also had a handle break but for the 289 plus tax I paid for it I’m fairly satisfied. Now that I had the handles replaced with islander handles it’s like having a mr2la for less than half the price. But I’m also wondering about the reef reels. If I was buying a new reel right now I’d buy another trophy and replace the handles with islander ones

I really like my x5’s. I had tons of creep on the mr3’s and they have cork drags which were worse in the wet. The Trophy was pretty smooth and quiet. The sound of the Amundsens gets the heart racing on a good pull

I had a pink one on the boat all season this year, , it was a gift for the ol lady... It is a great reel. The drag is superior to the Islander and Trophy, I didn't have to deal with reel creep on it. She hammered some decent hogs with it.

I bought one a year ago and after reeling up my first chinook on it, I quickly bought a second. I love the feel of these reels. The smooth solid aluminum, the appropriate drag that never creeps, the comfy big paddles for my fat fingers, I feel like Brent the owner really put a ton of thought and care into the design and that is why they have the cult following that they do. Not to mention his personal touch of answering via email any questions that come in.

Can’t recommend these enough as I think it’s a top of the line product at a middle level price aka is great value for the quality.

Also got a 9ft rod to go with the reel from him and it’s definitely a sweet combo to have.

Bought one about a month ago and I gotta say its pretty sweet!!!.. I've only had the pleasure of reeling in a chinook on an Islander once so I can't give an accurate comparison but its way WAY better then my old Daiwa mooching reel...So far its brought in a 17 pound chinook outta Nootka Sound and a 25 pounder outta Port Renfrew ( the fight of a life time..on my own in some weather, steering the boat and { trying } to net the sucker..net blowing around in the wind getting caught on everything possible in the boat ...long story short I had this fish right near the boat for about half an hour fumbling with the net and throttle and steering and all I had to do was keep the rod tip up and the reel drag did the rest!!!..For about half the price of an Islander I would recommend em!!!
Get an autopilot with a remote attached to your lifejacket and never have to fumble with steering again.... First time I was fighting a fish and my friend said "hey I'll steer" and I said "nevermind, I got it" pulled out the remote attached to my lifejacket, turned the boat slightly and then autopilot kept us on a steady course even into the wind... life changer hahaha

I have both the Trophy's (with islander springs) and recently got the R3EF (and have a TMX5). I am running both this season to see what I like better. The reason I got the R3EFs? I tried them on a friends boat and liked them. They have a carbon drag like the TMX 5 but have free spool like the Trophy's which I like for setting my gear without having to adjust drag back and forth.

TMX 5 I liked for the carbon drag but missed the free spool. I run 3 downriggers so I will likely keep both the Trophy's and R3EFs. TMX5 will likely go up for sale.

I will keep the Trophy's for "new, noob" fisherman and use the R3EFs for when I'm with people who know how to fish.
