Queen Charlottes third week of Aug

I will be up there from Aug 22-29, circum-navigating the islands for work.

What type of fishing can I expect?? Should I bring the heavy gear for springs, or the lite stuff for coho??

Any places to recommend to particularly hit??

Whitefish should still be good.

Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hey, fishing up here in Masset has been pretty hard the last week or so, at least for me.
Haven't seen a spring in a while, and the Coho were absent for me last time out too!
I'm going to be headed out tomorrow if the weather co-operates, I can give you a more up to date report after then.
If you can, I'd bring both sets of gear.
If you can only bring one set, I'd bring the heavy set, you always have the chance of getting into something big up here.

Where exactly are you going in the QC's ?
I have fished up there for 12 years- all on west side. Be happy to provide any info I can with the fishing if I can help.

We will travelling around both islands, staring in QC City and returning there a week later, doing work as we go, but we will have some free time to fish in the evenings.

Thanks for your offer.

It definitely slows down for the Chinook and even the Coho for that time of year, they are still there just not in the great numbers you see earlier in the season. If you are into the rivers they are loaded up with coho around then. Halibut are always around especially if you duck over to Renell Sound west of QC City.

Well, the waves were larger than I like to fish yesterday, so we went out today. We only caught 2 salmon, one Coho and one Chinook. However, the Chinook was my biggest to date, measuring 40" X 25" for a calculated weight of 32Lbs. Fun Day on the water up here!

Unfortunately, all my insight is from west side ( Kano Inlet, Englefield area, Tasu etc).
I've had friends that have fished out of Massett but was 3 years ago and they did very very good. Same techniques as west side. cut plug or mooching , looking for bait balls, same as most places. They got some great springs ( to lo 40's) and very nice halis but don't know any exact spots.
Wish i could be of more help.
Good luck and great fishing

A friend of my fishing partner's son is a young DFO guy in Queen Charlotte City. Name is Ben Rahier. Former guide and still finds time to fish lots. Worth a shot

Tons of Fish

It's been excellent for a couple of weeks on the West Coast out of QC City/Sandspit, but there's been heavy rain and gales for the last couple of days, so things could change. Two weeks ago, there were a few fish in the low 40-pound range, and many between 20 and 30, and they were extremely eager to hit spoons.

Last week, the size dropped, but there were lots of fish 12-20, and they were overwhelmingly interested in anchovies behind a green flasher, so I was forced to go to bait for the first time this summer. I had thrown ten frozen anchovies still in the package in for insurance, and we caught four springs and a coho in about an hour before going jigging, and still had three anchovies left.

Your best bet as a tourist is to go out with a local guide. Randy Tennant is probably the least expensive of the Haida guides, and he has good success. I've fished Haida Gwaii for over 30 years, and anyone who thinks it slows down late in August hasn't fished there much!

Thanks for all the info guys.

The trip was cancelled on Friday as the person with a higher pay grade decided to have someone else go instead of moi.

There will always be next year though, so this info will be kept.

Again thanks for all the replies.

Cheers
