Quadra Island Fishing

Hello,

My family and I are planning a trip to Quadra island this summer, and I'm hoping this community can help me make it a memorable one (especially for my new fiancee).

We'll be staying at Hariot Bay from July 10 - July 18. I would be grateful if anyone could provide some hints on locations for salmon, prawns, and crab.

I have a 14' boat with all the necessary gear, but I am not at all familiar with this area.

I promise to post pics of any successful catches here, thanks in advance! :D

For salmon you can try the francisco point area to the green marker, south of harriot bay at the SE corner of the island, can prawn there too just watch the tides. Crab try Hernando or Savary islands.

Thanks Lawman, I appreciate it. I've heard that crabbing isnt so hot around Quadra...true?

just what kind of oncorhynchus are you? as i hope you and especially your fiancee are aware that many die after spawning, maybe you should adopt, lol,jk, stay tuned to the reports in the saltwater section over the next few weeks and you will see exactly where the fish are being caught, nothing compares to current local knowledge as well, so when u get there or on your way there you can ask at the local(campbell river) tackle shops, river sportsman and tyee marine, also ask around the docks, im sure someone will set ya straight on what they are using and/or where they're catching, heriot bay is a beauty place, i'm sure you'll both enjoy yourselves....holmes*

Hahaha thanks holmes

There are crab around Quadra but they tend to be in select locations that the locals are very reluctant to divulge. Most will give up their kids before they'll give away a crabbing location. Still, it doesn't hurt to ask at the sports stores. They'll at least point you in the right direction.

The Hump is a rise a couple of miles south of cape mudge. It tops out around 140(ish) IIRC. You'll see the fleet gathered there. Current rushes fairly stiff in the area so I hope you have big (cannon)balls. 12lb or more is the usual there.

I've heard crabbing in gowland harbour is doable, and I know you can prawn back side of rebecca spit (although I've never had any luck with that myself).

With a rig like that I'd stick close to the kelp beds and forget about about fishing deep-too many things can go wrong too fast with heavy gear down and all that water moving around.

Have fun & stay safe!

As promised, here's a pic of our fishing today and yesterday. Its been a great trip so far...now if I can just find those prawns...
