Hi guys Wolf here as you know got a new boat this year and wondering if anyone on here is wanting or knows of anyone wanting to get rid of a set of stainless steel props for my new boat they are B4 and for a 290 volvo leg.
Either cash or a trade in a fishing charter???

Thanks in advance

Hey Wolf, I was looking for the same. There is a used set at Advance Marine (CR) for $1000. I went with new from Getaprop.com for $1200 + duty, way better than the $1900 + tax Advance wants. btw C4 is the stainless version of the B4's.

Man, be carefull with that much stailess against that leg! I'm not so sure with the prop area on an Volvo that blade deflection would be the same problem as on a Merc, where the blades are smaller.

Plus, one other thing I would keep in mind, as opposed to Aluminium, you are going to have 45+ pounds spinning around down there, I think the added wear and tear on an older leg from reversing to a stop may be detrimental in the long run, even with the neat Volvo cone shift.

I have never owned a Volvo DP before, BUT I know the guys with the Bravo III's often have them turn to swiss cheese with the big stainless props on 'em.

My last boat was a volvo DP and I was advised that I should stay with aluminum over SS. The reason why was, if you hit something with the aluminum prop the blades with take the force and most likely bend. With the SS the leg shaft and gear drive will take the force and any damages will most likely happen with-in the leg case or the prop seals.

This could be BS but it makes sense to me.

The DP gear drives and shafts are +20X the cost of new aluminum props. Actually I think they are the most expensive gear drives of all. I ran the aluminum props for 4 years and each time I pulled the boat I took my hammer and pounded out the dents.

Our new boat's motor and Spencer's both have SS props on 250 engines. Both of us in the first 100 hours of running time have snapped off the cavitations plate due to hitting something and with the prop being stronger than the plate the damage was to the aluminum plate.

If the performance ratings of SS VS Aluminum are close or the same I'd keep the props you have?

WOLF,

just curious what size props are you running?
Are they aluminum or SS,what rpm are you getting
at wot.The reason I'm asking I just swithed
over from single to duo prop and have a set of
B5 props to try. I also have a 26 FT. HOURSTON
but mine is the sedan model where the head is in
rear of the cabin.
Thanks in advance

Thanks guys I still do want SS as I have heard what you all have said and be it alum or SS if you hit a log or stick they both get wrecked I want SS for the simple reason (performance)
I asked both my mech and The prop guy I know and they both said no ill effects from either. And the SS out performs way better but I do hear ya I just wanted to se if it really made a diddeferance and if the price was right (cheap) LOL
then I would have tried them as I have 2 sets of alum I just really like SS.

Wireman they are B4's WOT is 4400 rpm and I had that boat getting 40 mph quite impressive for that heavy of a boat it says "dry" weight is 6600 lbs as per the hourston web site.

Hope that helps
