On a brighter note, prawning was very good today off coles bay.
buddy and i limited (hope that's not a dirty word?)
in about 2 hours.
we thought of dropping salmon gear, however it is now closed.

My son was out off Mill Bay last week and limited in a couple of hours. I've been surprised how good its been with the commercial just ending.
Limiting on prawns is not dirty. Needing to get a second deep freeze 'cause the first one is full is. Especially when you can get fresh ones so easily.But I really don't want to get into it.

fish there. so when it's good, we like to take
our limit of 200 prawns.

My buddy was in the inlet yesterday and got none for 6 traps
He had them in our usual areas that do well.
How deep are you finding them? Do they go deeper in the summer?

Nothing wrong with that at all. I do the same. My prawn gear is stacked on the dock beside my boat right now. Any time i'm going to an area with prawns, I take it along. 200 prawns gets eaten up pretty quick. Even 2 peoples limit . If you take them home to the family they don't last long.
I fish 4 commercial style traps.If another person with me, I tag 1 smaller trap off each.

2 traps per string x 4 strings.
they had been soaking for a couple days, so maybe that was the
difference ?

Does your buddy ever have problems with people touching them with keeping them out so long?

How much line do you run on your traps?
I have 300 feet and usually don't drop them deeper than 220.
Any rule of thumb for how much extra line you need?

i run 300' of line tips, and i frop 240-260 everytime im out..260' is pushing a little becasue of currents etc, but 240-250 is fine with 300'

so far so good, they have been down since end of july...
but they are fished regularly by 3 or4 guys so they keep
a pretty close eye on them !

i went prawning off albert head, set the trap at 6pm last friday, within 20 mins the floats were sucked under by the current, but thats good because no one else could touch them and i now have a commercial prawn trap, a big 4.5' thing thats like 25lbs so it didnt get dragged too far. I set the trap in 225 feet of water and when i came back at slack tide in the morning the trap drifted 100' and went i found it in 215' of water. when i pulled it i got about 30 jumbo prawns. the whole prawn was about 10" long and slightly larger then a toonie fat. all the small prawns excaped through the large mesh, but the big ones were great with steak

Have you ever tried attaching your trap to a small anchor to keep it from drifting?

i have but that really wont stop some one pulling my trap but large boats move in the area and the trap line could of got wrapped up in a big prop.

Hey Mongoose, have you been out prawning lately off Albert Head? Would you go deeper or stay between 250 & 280 at this time of year?
