Prawn trap thieves

Not the traps, but the content........anyone else ever run into this? Pulled this string up on saturday, needless to say there were only a few prawns left in each of the traps, he was enjoying a great buffet. We were wondering how the heck to get him off, but just lifted the trap out of the water and he slipped off very fast.

HOLY SHYT!!!

Great pictures. I've had it happen to me before. Hauling up the trap I could see the orange from a long way down. I thought I had a monster haul of prawns. As it got closer I saw just what you took pictures of. It's amazing that they can reach in and eat the prawn tails through the mesh. There were prawns heads scattered around the inside of my trap.

Very amazing animals. Looks like you did okay just the same.

Bet that would make great hali bait. Never done one myself but gaffing it would probably do it ???
What would Capt. Nemo do? LOL

JUST FISHEN'

i had one INSIDE my trap that was even bigger than your octopus last year! Pretty cool to see and have on board, defiently something to talk about for a few days haha, very cool how it can fit through such a small hole.

We were out in area 15, north of powell river. We've done ok for the past few weeks, when the weather allows getting out. It's surprising that he stayed on there while we hauled the traps from 340 ft.

Yup-- excellent for butt bait-- but also very yummy for hu-mans too!

That guy would have never been allowed to return to the water on my boat[:p] Burrrp!

I stick them between the eyes. Another way is to grab the mantle and turn it inside out . Watch out for the beak--- and stick it from above the mouth into the brain.

The mantle is the most tender meat. The tentacles need to be WELL pounded after blanching and skined. Pressure cooking them also tenderizes the tentacles.

Greek Octopus salad-- just great!

Nice photos! I've never had much luck prawning but because I'm allergic to them I don't try very hard. It is very discouraging to be eating cheesies or chips while all the other guys on the boat have a bowl of garlic butter going and are snorfin' down big prawns with a side order of dungeness crab legs.
On the octopus inking thing....We were Marlin fishing off Cabo San Lucas and we ran into a bunch of squid. They took the large hootchies we were dragging. I pulled a 20-25 lb.squid up beside the boat. As I leaned over the rail to get a close up look the guide gaffed the squid and I got seriously inked all over my white t-shirt. The silly thing was once my shirt dried there was no stain or marks on it at all. Maybe this squid's "inker" malfunctioned? Funniest thing....
