Portable depth finder

Does/has anyone used a portable depth finder and if so could you recommend one? I am on a budget and therefore looking for one under $300. Is there such a one available?

I've never used this but recently saw this one in a West Marine Flyer:

Okay... are you looking for a "depth finder", "sounder" or "fishfinder"? There is a difference!
