port hardy report

I personally hope you guides out there that are posting here keep doing so. Not because I follow you out as a "sheep", I have never even fished Hardy. Reading these posts and seeing your pictures keeps some of us in touch with the salt bettween trips! Shame on any of you that do follow guides because half the satisfaction of fishing is the search or hunt, so when you are successful you can say you did it on your own! These guys put in countless hours to know where fish are so don't crowd them, however many times in the past i've fished where guides were because I knew fish were there just the same as the guides knew. I did not follow them there as sheep, so keep in mind some sportys also know where to fish from years of just fishing! JUST MY TWO CENTS!

I would think charter businesses posting good fishing results may help the business. Just happens to be some unintentional adverse effects of taking this approach.

I cant believe a guy that makes his living guiding and depends on contact with the public for good will, could make such a ignorant, stupid comment. In case you havent realized it Chad, ITS A PUBLIC RESOURCE. The non-guided angler has every right to fish next to you, whether you like it or not.

And if I was asked to recommend a guide in Hardy-- Its sure wont be you. But Dave WILL get my recommendation....

Since Chad has made his last post no need to worry about any follow -ups from him I guess. Dave gets my vote as well for being a stand up guy and hard working guide. I will not take some of the sheep comments seriously............ as I have been fishing for 45-60 minutes on some spots prior to Chad showing up to some of my old haunts as well, what does that make him?????
I do some steelhead guiding during the winter season and unfortunatley the waters I fish are all visible from the highway. I've learned it's next to impossible to keep non-guides from figuring out some of my favorite spots. I do appreciate it however when they let me have an equal chance to drift a hole with my clients so I also have a chance to hook an early morning fish once in a while. I think we all need to work together and be respectful of each others access to the fishing. I hate nothing more than spending a day on the water in conflict with guides or sporties alike. I fish for pleasure not to get all stressed out and upset with everyone. I make it a point to learn the local etiquette and try to fit in with the old timers, locals, guides etc so we can all get along and enjoy our days on the water. It's going to be hard for Chad to enjoy his chosen summertime profession if he can't work with a few sporties who are trying to enjoy the resource that the Pt Hardy Chamber of Commerce tries to push so hard to sports anglers all over the West. Not sure all the businesses in town (Hardy Bouys, Quarterdeck Marina , Hardy Sports and the like) would appreciate his attitude towards sports anglers.
He's also forgetting as we get older some of us will quit running the fog, etc and decide to take a guided trip once in a while, what goes around ...comes around. Who would you take a charter with after some of these posted comments.................?????

Same here CL and after reading his comment, it is no wonder that the only people he has been able to swing over is the people at www.Bloodydecks.com. Not sure what he gains from this BS, but I have been letting others know about who to go to for fishing in PH....and it is not CWS or the sheep herders themselves...Codfathers. David will always get my recommendation.

Oh how things have changed. When I was guiding, I could care less if others followed me, I did my talking at the cleaning table, cause anybody can fish an area, but it does take some skill to catch a fish, especially when it is slow or the fish are scattered.

Quite worring about the others and catch fish, after all that is what you spend countless hours honing your skill and figuring out the perfect roll and leader length is for. You have the advantage before any one else hits the water, so use it and enjoy what the ocean has to offer.

Cheers

Fishing at Duval was slow yesterdy, at least in the morning. It is the clearest water I have ever seen in August. I have fished here for 24 years and guided 18. At least the divers are having a good time!

The weather is going for a s**t again today, but maybe that will bring in some more fish. I am thinking about moving to the other side (Winter Harbour), but even that involves a lot of running. At least the Inlet is fairly protected and there are no cruise ships to run into!

there is a huge body of salmon off yhe charlotes now, and dfo has announced a commercial opening for the remaining 80,000 springs allocated to the trollers, and there may not be any gear restrictions. Hopefully they come down the inside, but too early to tell. this weather will certainly set them on their way.

Thanks for the kind words guys. There are a lot of good guys up our way with a couple sour apples that spoil the bunch....but that is the same at pretty much any area. Some are protective of their area as they have been up here for awhile...plus it is true that some people that do follow charters (not saying any on here do by any means) don't really know what they are doing so it can mess up a guys day from them weaving in and out. However, I will say all the guys I've met on here that I have seen fishing nearby myself have never followed, and are genuinely good guys. So much of the industry is word of mouth...very important to remember that for a business...already fully booked for Aug next year and 1/3 for July for both boats...must say something.

Chad, I resent the fact you somewhat implied my posts on here are the reason for the "sheep" as you call them.

Headed out tomorrow for my last 3 days of the year...too bad too as it sounds like tons of fish just heading down now...by the time they hit Hardy I"ll be in Ottawa! DAMN! Plus some rough seas for tomorrow...will see how it goes.

David,
I once was a sheep... then a goat... now I am what I am! I once didn't have a clue... then became better... now... NOT a bad fisherman! Once upon a time I kept everything to myself... didn't share anything... with anybody! Now... I share everything with everybody! I have found that I enjoy that! It is really great when I take people out to fish and tell them... "I will show you what I know... then YOU need to figure it out yourself!" Most people tell me that it is great for me to catch a fish... and let them bring it in... BUT... the real enjoyment for them... IS to do it on their own!

You just keep doing what you think is right!

Would love to fish with you someday!... This "old goat", just might learn something! :)

Glad you gave us a final post David. Hope your last 3 trips are rewarding if the weather will cooperate with you a bit.
Hope I didn't get in your way too much this summer, enjoyed watching you and dad do your thing each day on the water. Hope your dad got a chance to enjoy the liquids I dropped by your headquarters in W---.
Good luck with school and don't hesitate to keep in touch as you have my e-mail.
I'll be sure and check up on your uncle when we're staying at your lodge in Oct-Nov.
