The chinook salmon run has not yet materialized off Port Angeles this season. The trollers and moochers are having difficulty locating what few fish are available. However, the salmon that are showing up are being mainly being caught on metal jigs. Four of our last five outings, we landed eight chinook daily. We drift-jigged along the kelp beds in 52-59 ft of water, exclusively vertical jigging "Yellow Bird Products" Kandlefish. Best size was the 1 1/2 oz'er in the glow-in-the-dark or fluorescent green back / pearl white belly finishes. Each day, we seemed to be the only boat that was doing well Usually, jigs are effective when large numbers of fish are present. It was really enjoyable when only a single fish showed on the fish finder and the Kandlefish connected.
