Pender Island Crabbing

Plan on spending a week in Otter Bay and Poet's Cove with the family...

I can't seem to find any guidebooks or maps on where to start prospecting for crab....

Any thoughts/ideas of where to start for a greenhorn (only been crabbing for a year, never fished salt until two years ago)

You need to look for sandy or mud bottoms with eel grass 15'-100'. You might find it in bays around the area.
Check an on line chart like mapster 3.0

You can crab in the bay right across from Poet's cove. You will see lots of other sets there. Not fantastic crabbing but probably as good as anywhere else near Pender. Your other option would be to run over to Sidney Island and set there.

Any pointers are appreciated.. We have no problem running a bit to find some crab or prawns for that matter, but I don't know if I would have any luck prawning... never tried.

Any general directions are always appreciated...

THANK YOU!

When you're at Poet's, ask for Tim, I work down in the Marina, and if you're there on a weekend, or in the summer, I'll give you lots of pointers.

When you're staying at Otter Bay, there are 2 locations I would recommend: one is a 10 minute cruise(18kts) away the other 3. I would go for ganges, as they have good crabbing, PM me for the other spot.

Thanks Tim! I will... we are arriving on the 25th of June. We cruise at 25-30knots.. distance isn't a problem.

Camp Bay on the south end looks promising.. eelgrass/good tidal movement/right depths... Any thoughts?

We are in a 28' Armstrong tin can... sticks out amongst the yachts.. Any preference on American brews?

You're welcome, If I get a day off around that time, I might be able to show you the ropes of fishing around here too... I would recommend against camp bay because of REALLYY strong currents, you might just loose a trap or 2.

Please make a reservation as soon as possible (actually 9-5 on Friday would be good), if you have not already, because we are filling up fast.

Tim
