Peetz Supports Pacific Salmon Foundation

I was eyeing up these reels last night. Does anybody know how well they work? The introductory offer with spectra line and bonus flasher/dodger or Sitka spoons looks pretty sweet.

I actually have one of my Grandfather's Peetz reels from the 1960s. That is a momento now...no boat time planned.

Apparently they are making some major improvements to the reels (drag system, replacing some of the brass, etc) to make them smoother, etc. Like many on the coast, I've got a few old Peetz beauties but they are strictly for display at this point as some of them are 40 years old. They do have a very cool look IMO and I'd be interested to hear from anyone who is using the latest products to review how they fare.

I've got a few 30+ year old Peetz reels that are still going strong for Halibut fishing. When a hali takes a run you better move those fingers quickly!! Some of the Peetz reels that are in worse condition make for an excellent way to store fishing line, or for reversing the braid on other reels.

I caught some nice feeders on one of these while out with Andrew P a few weeks ago. Great feel. Like the new knobs. Like the clicker. Love the look. I'd prefer a modern drag knob but it's probably just because that is what I'm used too.

faaack, I thought I had everything!
Looks like there will be some gear bought soon - but they have a lot to live up to!
A 3" reel for sox would be FUN!

!!!

Well, I have to say that I am completely biased about these reels since I fish nothing but Peetz, and have had a hand in testing and developing the new drag system, playing with prototypes over the last couple years.....I absolutely love the result! It has all the same feel as the original but with a super smooth stainless steel one way drag system like no other. It is built in the same fashion as all Peetz products; built right and made to last. Aside from the one way drag some of the other changes are nice wooden through-hull mounted handles and the all new drag wingnut is formed to have even pressure on the drag plate. The plate and washer are close to double the diameter of the old drag washers giving more control for setting the drag right with little effort. No line creep at all and you don't need to crank it down hard to hold in downrigger like needed when using a Classic.

Another sweet thing is that the drag system can be added to almost any Peetz reel, meaning your favorite old reel can be given some new life.

Now that is a feature that will appeal to a lot of people-clever thinking on Peetz' part.

"Entirely new, our unique one-way drag mechanism ensures the evolution series of reels are easier than ever to use and virtually eliminates the "knuckle buster" effect!"

Looks like I won't be buying any of the new ones. I know that this is personal taste, but a major appeal of the Peetz to me is the sense of "game on!" once you release the old wing nut!

Andrew P, we have been using the 4" for years on coho and sox, but a 3" would be fun to try - as long as it is a true knuckle buster.

Smiley, it sounds like you, as I do, prefer to control the 'drag' wide open with palm, etc. Open it wide and there is no difference between the classics other than the fact that is it spinning on bearings (which is pretty darn slick). It sure helps when you are passing the rod to a rookie or netting a fish solo. There is no question that this advancement will help the less experienced angler and is not quite as pure as a wooden round spinning on a brass bar....but there will still be busted knuckles...I have seen my fair share already on the prototypes.

The 3" and 3.5" models are currently two way drag reels. Single handle with counter weight. They would be very fun for coho and sockeye. There is a significant difference in size between the 3 and 3.5" and I would say the larger is the best fit (also for steelhead or larger trout fishing).

I should have mine next week as well.. I think this a major improvement and I think Peetz is going in right direction... The biggest thing again also I like is its made on Canada.:o Big win for me.
