Painting my own Spoons

Hey there,

I want to try out doing some of my own paint jobs on some spoons, using a combination of nail polish, glitter, reflective tape and sharpies. Anyone ever try this? Gonna pick up a bulk pack of 4" commercial spoons from Pacific Net and Twine. I've thought up some patterns that I think would kill them. Let me know what your experiences have been.

Cheers,
Nick

Hi Nick, Nail polish and sharpies don't mix well. The nail polish will eat away at the felt pen, cause it to run and sometimes even change the color. Learnt that lesson through my own trial and error tying flies... Im not sure what you would use as a gloss coat but Ive had good luck just applying a pen directly to the spoon and letting it dry. The ink will gradually wear off with use but you can always re-apply when need be. I carry a set of colored permanent bic pens on board the boat and they really come in handy. BTW, IronNoggin's pilchard spoon mod has produced well for me and my friends ... worth trying offshore WCVI.

hey fishtactic,

so you never use nail polish itself then? just pens to color them? I like the idea of nail polish because you can get so many colors( Glow, Gold, Silver, etc)

I painted quite a few this year, things to think about when doing your own spoons.
Some paints keep the smell for a LONG time, you don't want that so test the paints before you ruin your spoon.
The tapes work well, but get chewed up pretty fast, but if you have lots it's no biggie to just put more on. I taped a number of spoons this year that used to work just ok, now a couple of them are my go-to spoons.
Nail polish cracks and peels easily use a laquer or clear coat finish instead - again check for the lasting smell.
I found this just as much fun as tying flies, abit more expensive and I had more failures than successes. But you can always sand down the ones that don't work and start all over.
Have fun, painting and enjoy the fact when people ask, "what did you catch them on?" you can honestly say "you don't have it!"
Oh and of all the places I found to make goodies here's the motherload site, don't spread the intel or everyone and their cousin will be buying out all my goodies:

Agree about the tape-your local hobby shop is a good source for different prism tapes with glue backing. [8D]

Oh yea, Ideal Tackle in Campbell River has a whole whack of tapes hidden in a corner. Lots of colors and patterns.
