Outerwear

Hey guys,

Just got back from a trip to Tofino with my girlfriend. My good friend is the fishmaster for the fleet of inshore fly boats at weigh west. The action was non stop for coho between 7-12 lbs! Anyways, I really liked the outwerwear he had, was able to stay completely dry and warm all day(10 plus hours) on the water. The stuff I have now is helly hansen but is only really a waterproof shell. His was made by Gil and designed for offshore sailing. It was a combo of overalls and a jacket. Combined with gumboots this seems like a flawless combo for offshore salmon fishing with layering underneath.

What do you guys use? What's the best? I checked the Helly Hansen website and their offshore sailing jackets were $800 CAD. Too steep for me. Looking for some quality that will last and I will keep my current Helly Hansen rain overalls and jacket stowed on the boat for friends to use.

**On the same topic, what does everyone use for footwear when out on the chuck?

Cheers,
Nick

All denim.........all the time.

Didn't know they made denim in pink. Just kiddin, sorry I couldn't resist.

Hey Pip, I''ll probably be snoozing in my camper at the ramp tomorrow AM if you feel like wetting a line pound on the door to wake me.

Sorry for the hijack Demco.

As far as footware goes, thongs 90% of the time, but I've been known to wear shorts all winter long even while working outside. I'm a little bit older now, so I'm not that sily anymore. I still prefer shorts and thongs as long as I can get away with them.

P7110032.jpgI wear a construction grade raincoat that comes half way down my boots and a real sou-wester hat-quite fetching really and I don't have the problem with the bibs if I have to have a leak!! Kinda helps to have a beard so you look like Capt. Highliner!! Lots of layering underneath-seems to work and folds up and stores well.

wet skins and rubber boots, and mustang floatercoat(on drivers seat in pic.) for those cool early morning runs( dont have a boat with a heated cabin....YET;) )
2011 Nootka.jpg...pic is from a few weeks ago, our first morning out of Nootka, tied up at Friendly Cove...(me on the right)

Anyone know of a place with good prices on the Helly Hansen gear? Steveston Marine is the only place I've found that even carries their gear but I've always heard their super overpriced. Looking to pick up a jacket and pair of the overall pants(they call them bibs)...

ONO Trading has good pricing on HH stuff. I think they are in Port Kells, Surrey. I buy all my raingear from their Nanaimo location. I like the Impertech stretchy stuff as it is light weight but I'm looking at some hi vis Armour series stuff for this year.

As for boots. Xtra Tuff all the way. I tried some on at LFS in Bellingham and they are hands down the most comfortable rubber/neoprene boot I have ever tried on. I have a set ordered for myself and my son.

This is where I bought my outer shell sailing jacket at half price. Not sure if they have any deals right now. But, try them.

Demco.....you know what my gear is, the Helly sailing gear and it comes in a lot of price points. You can shop around and see what you can find but I am guessing if it's this year's stuff it will all be priced fairly comparably.

I love the sailing pants....so comfortable and mine have been very durable over the past 5 years.

Look around online for discounted Helly Gear too as you may be able to pick some of last years on a clearance website. Helly also sells gear through their own website too for this years lines.

In the spring they used to have a weekend outlet sale at their office/warehouse which was on Annacis Island.

LFS has an AWESOME selection of outerwear. I picked up some Gage outers this year and they quite nice. Can't wait to get into one of their insulated jackets. LFS has its 2 biggest locations in Alaska i believe, so it can give you an idea of the gear they carry. It's got to get it done!

ONO is good (up the road from me) but at times on the higher end of retail. Great boot selection though!

I really liked the store. We dropped by their booth at the Seattle boat show and decided to check out the store on the way home. I like the his vis yellow Grunden's Gage stuff for offshore. The store is like a big HC and PNT combined!!!

I have the Mustang Integrity coat, but rarely wear it because its simply too hot. Work up a sweat in 2-3 minutes. Good if you wake up cold though...

For rainwear the best I've had is the jacket/pants at the hotel I stayed at last year in Tofino. Don't know the brand, but it was waterproof & lightweight, with layers underneath it was perfect.

Bogs for the feet in wet weather. Super Comfortable and watertight. But also too hot/sweaty on nice days.

I wouldnt go quite so far, the sport fishing section (as far as tackle, rods, reels) is limited at best @ LFS. Kept to one small section more or less. The selection I find though is good and well targeted for west coast fishing. They just don't have the abundance of PNT. Although price, LFS takes it if they have what you are looking for.
Sculpin, If you are looking for a good marine hardware and supply store...try Redden Marine, just up the road from LFS. No fishing equipment but just about everything you need to operate and maintain a boat. Not a repair shop that can get you Yami or other like parts, but hardware, riggings, buoys, ect ect, they have it on the shelves.

The bellingham harbour is a fun place to spend a few hours...and dollars!!

Now that you mentioned it the tackle department was kind of lacking. We were going to head over to Redden Marine but got sided tracked with some of the best clam cowder we had ever had at the Web Locker restaurant nearby. Yeah very cool place to spend a few hours.

I bought a suit light Dokatah overalls and jacket from marks work wear house. Sometimes they have everything in the store 30-40 percent off. It does the job. If its gonna be brutal i throw on my Stika hunting gear and layer properly.
