you'll get a lot of different answers to that question lol.
maintenance is key to long life in an outboard,
changing the oils regularly, plugs ,filters etc. will all help.
I had over 3500 hrs on my Honda.
As far as manufacturers, Yamaha, Honda Suzuki, Mercury,Etec
all make good products.
