I came across the 1971 BC Saltwater Fishing Guide recently. Lee Straight's most recommended set up for cohoes was a 4-6 ounce slip sinker, #1 Gibbs Dodger, and a either a Henry Smith Sspecial and or a flashtail on a 24-30" leader. Also cool to see the ads for brand new boats like K&C and Fibreform that are mostly availablse as free projects now.

I still use dodgers with herring strip for coho and when things are slow will use it on springs also , I have a very old commercial dodger which is 14 ins long and really whips a hootchie around but am afraid to use it as it is the last one I have and have not seen any others.

Henry Smith's were deadly on coho on ECVI around bowser in the 1970's. I have a bunch of them in a tackle box from days of yore Mind you, there were millions of coho in the water in those days.

dodgers work great with bait i have lotsa confidence in pal3s or4s lots of good springs on those

millions of coho around in the 70s east coast of island then nothing,
, almost like that fishery never happened.

I have a few Henry Smith's too. Not sure how strong that plastic would be now. I saw Grandpa lose a 30lb or so chinook off Tent Island in the early 70's when his green HS came back broken in half after a spirited hand to fin combat. He was playing it by hand because his homemade downrigger had no rod attached. He just cranked it up unclipped from the wire just above his homemade concrete-in-a-tomato-juice-can weight and played the last 30 feet of line, dodger and lure by hand. Illegal now, probably was then too.

Can any of you guys put up a pic of one of the Henry Smith lures Please?

I remember as a little kid, fishing with my Opa out at Beechey Head. He used the old Peetz reels, wire line, 'pool que' rod with roller guides, and the two pound ball off the drop line. He used an Old Pal dodger with herring strip or would switch to a green and white hootchie if there were lots of dogfish around.

I remember him being impressed with the new HotSpot flashers.

Oh, and of course, no depth sounder, compass, or GPS. I do seem to recall a ratty old chart stuffed up under the bow.

I remember the same thing pretty much, but with a Nootka Dodger.. man Even with the 2 pound ball it would make those pool cues bounce!

Take only what you need.

Good old Krippled "K" for me! thats my coho rig! Anyone know where i could pick a few up as i only have 2 left :(

abe and al kelp cutter with a gold hootchie or a black and silver speckles with a 8 ounce trolling wieght that when it got to the rod tip you just kept cranking and it let go and slid down to the dodger

I'm setting my priorities. I'm making time for fishing.

How about the old deep sixs and planer boards fishing in the saanich inlet with homemade strip my old man was great at cutting it a true art he would get so it would taper paper thin at the tail and flutterd so nicely.then we made an downrigger out of a tricyle wheel and used the old weights that they used in window with the pullys on the side.

Or all the old plugs lucky louie, rex fields, lyman all good i still use some of the old ones.

man have we ever come a long way in 30 years almost scary!!!!

Ayup! Sure have come along eh Wolf. Now we have all the technology in the world but not many fish to curtail it on. Ahh the days of jigging off cow bay, chesterfield rock, seems like twas just yesterday[V] Would be great to see it come back.

How about the Stone house with planers and a downrigger fished by itself. Lots of hand lining the last 20-30ft. I am amazed my old man still has his fingers. Anybody remember Carl Leong he was a master of Saanich inlet.

Tournament Proven !
