Okuma level wind reels

Ive used one last fall for sturgeon. Would take one over Penn 320 GT, the ol standby.

Yes, I have the two speed gold titus 15 model with the lever drag it's not a level wind but I have been very happy with it. It is so easy to reel from deeper water, no more rod twist from heavy cranking, its a breeze.
The prices are great. I have used mine for bottom fish now for two years with no problems. Plenty of room for 80-100lb tuff line etc, I think I have 300yrds of 100lb test.
Great value !!!! :D

I have 4 titus gold 15's and they are good when they work but i have to send mine in at least twice a year. They just lock up.

Last season i sent them in and when i finaly got them back i got one use out of them and now just got them back so we will see this time.

I think for the average guy they will work great but 100 days at the bank pulling monster 10-20# chickens there toast.

My Penn Senators, although not level winding, have needed ZERO service through 4 years of neglect and abuse all summer. I don't think I've had them apart for oil yet. They cost about the same as a Penn GT, and a lot less then an Okuma. They don't have the fancy transmission, but they sure do last and winch up the big buggers.

I have 2, both T20L's
They have been great no problems..they are a couple years old.

I am with Islandgirl, TDL 20's no problems with PowerPro 80 lbs. and some pretty good halibuts todate....:D SS

I also have the okuma very happy with it,especially the two speed ratios. It would be nice if it were a level wind but i guess that would be one more thing to break down, very happy so far! Cheers

Okuma is a poor quality product and service from the Okuma company is at best mixed.

The Shimano TLD 20 is many times more reliable and if you can find an older one made in Japan so much the better the Malaysian made ones have some lube issues which are easy to deal with on your own.

(Note the reels as shown in the link are beat to death on California party boats by some of the dumbest characters ever.)

I havent tried their big reels, but i bot a smaller level wind for steelheading (brand new) and it was crap, used it one day, now it sits in a big box full of old fishing gear. I will let people i dont like give it a try though!! Definatley get what you pay for. that said i have a small okuma fly reel that is pretty good.

Looking at one for a Halibut reel.
Anybody have any experience with these ?

hey craven,

I have a brand new never been used 'Okuma Classic CL 450L'. Wanted the specific rod but it came with the reel that i didnt need. let me know if you're interested

Cheers All,

Tried the Okuma but it packed in too quickly. I have TLD 20s and they are rock solid. The only item I have changed is the drag washer (which is HUGE) and I keep them well lubricated. They have pulled more fish than I care to think about. You get what you pay for.

Tell you what, I have several Okuma reels, 2 flyreels and a Magda Pro that I use for Salmon and they're awesome. When it came to a big game reel though, I shyed away from Okuma because I couldn't find one with a level wind. Instead I opted for a JP 300 which comes under several brand names. This thing is very tough, has an awesome drag and all the bells and whistles. It holds 300 yards of 130 LB braided line and I bought it for 39.00 bucks on E Bay including shipping. A comparable reel in the local tackle shop would cost at least 150 bucks, maybe 200. You should check it out, it's a great deal.

Okuma level winds are not on the same level of quality as their spinning reels..
Good entry level level winds but durability isn't there, parts supply and warrenty service is fair to poor. Their spinning reels are a totally different item and are a very good quality..
I've had my Penns(330's and 320's) for sturgeon for 8 years and they continue to shine...Can't say the same for Okuma's over the long haul..[V]
Just one man's opinion, its your money, spend it where you will..
