Nootka VS Campbell River

I need to make a call on confirming my booking for Nookka for the middle of August. I will be at Painter's for a work deal for 3 days prior before heading to Gold River. I have never fished either Nootka or CR so not sure what to expect. Just wondering if I should back out of the Nootka deal and just stay and Fish CR for another 4 days.

Thoughts I would be bringing my own Boat. I have fished Renfrew in years past.

Thanks for input...

Do Nootka, seriously..

Fill the dam tub!

I'm a CR guy, and I think Fish Lifter is too. And we both say, if you have to choose choose Nootka. But, BB has it best: do both.

Nootka

Campbell River was once touted as the "Salmon Capitol of The World". Sadly, as most inside fisheries, it is but a mere shadow of what it once was.
The outside, or the real WCVI still offers some excellent fishing opportunities, and in general will out-produce the vast majority of those on the inside, including CR.

Do them both. You have noted you have the time and you're already set up to do so. Passing on Nootka will always leave you wondering just what you missed out on. Going, you'll have a direct comparison of the two. Methinks you'll soon discover for yourself just which one might be termed "Better".

Cheers,
Nog

Thanks for the input.

I am going to Fishing 3 Days with Painter's...
I thought with a little local knowlodge I might have better Chance of getting into the fish when on my boat.

"Paid Fore" is West Coast ready so heading to Nootka should not be a problem.

Just this work deal is screwing up my Friday to get to Gold River and out to the Lodge.

I will have to eat The Friday and Head out Saturday AM.

Do both. The run out to Nootka is much nicer in the morning. The inlet almost always blows up in the afternoon. A very beautiful place to fish.

Oh, I would do "Nootka", too if had to choose... but you need to look at Campbell Rivers return last year?

I agree with... DO BOTH! :D

I would do both if possible. But if I could do only one I would choose Nootka. Beautiful place to fish and so many locations inside and out to get that Tyee you have been looking for :D

I will be in Nootka in August myself for a few days. Can't wait to get out there again!

Reel Chaos

Having lived in CR for 3 years I can say there are some times when the fishing locally can be good (I have a 47 pound CR fish mounted on my wall as evidence). However, I sadly have to admit CR fishing has deteriorated in recent years compared to the glory days, and if you really wanted a shot at large Chinook Nootka is the place to be. Even when I lived in CR, we all went to Nootka for the hogs.

Bottom line is the West Coast has more consistent fishing than the East Coast, and that is a simple fact. The migration patterns have changed with the ocean conditions such that most of the fish go down the west coast. This really started to happen in the early 1990's with some fluctuations up and down, but general trend is fewer fish in the last 20 years migrating on the inside.

So my vote is Nootka.
