New Phone - best for on water

Hey all.

I can read a lot of you use your smartphones for fishing related uses. GPS, on water communication ect..

My old flip phone is giving me headaches so its time to upgrade. Which is better, Android or iPhone? or should I stick with the flip and get a Samsung Rugby.

I don't need or want top of the line, I need a phone for basic porpoises that has a good cam/corder, Surfin' the net, and maybe the odd helpful fish/boating app

cheers

IPhone 4S it has GPS so when you have no signal you can still use Navionics. Plus the apps are cheaper. 16Gig IPhone 4S are cheap check London Drugs.

I accidentally drowned my Blackberry earlier this Summer and replaced it with the new Galaxy S3 from Samsung - I use it on the boat with the Navionics app - excellent for recording and saving tracks and waypoints from trips that we have done. Lots of other useful apps available and the screen is relatively large and vibrant. Off course I don't know how it will hold up in the long run as my old Blackberry had a more rugged feel to it.

I can get any of these phones free:

iPhone 4
galaxy ace Q
HTC one S
4g galaxy S II X
galaxy ace

I like free..these are what Telus is offering me w/o a new contract...don't really know anything about 4g or...anything about them except the camera end. iPhone is apparently easier to use which would be good for me.

is the 4S the only one with GPS?

Hey FB....

As much as for "corporate" work with my job I am a die hard Blackberry supporter/user.....for your use and wanting some nav/fishing type apps I would look to an iPhone4S as noted earlier. With the release of the iPhone 5 coming up soon you will be able to get the 4S likely at a pretty good price.

You can get VERY good durable, waterproof cases that will withstand shock if drop and also prevent moisture from getting at the phone. I have seen one case that is waterproof and DURABLE that a friend has......he said "watch this" as he dropped his phone on pavement and it just bounced and nothing happened to it.

I was out fishing with TofinoGuy last weekend and he had a very durable case on his iPhone that I noticed but don't know the name of it; maybe drop him a line.

My lady has the blackberry (recent model) and I like it, but the keyboard is way to small for me. I've got stubby shop hands so I'm always looking for a poker to type with lol. It irritates the hell out of me...do iphones come with a poker or are is texting pretty easy with bigger letters??

So let me understand this. The Iphone 4 has a stand alone GPS that allows you to use Navionics any time as a back up to your fixed mount in case it goes down? ( I know you have to buy the app).

I can type quicker and with better spelling on my 4S then I can my laptop. I have never owned a stupid phone till this one and it took about 2 weeks and a couple trips to the store to figure out. Now I couldn't live without it. I have been able to do everything that i normally do at home on my laptop from my IPhone and my phone is linked and shares info with my HP laptop and updates or syncs when I am at home. The thing is great.

Only with the 4S model. I used it off shore this summer it was great.

You make an appealing case Owen..

when you view the internet on an iPhone, it doesn't show compressed websites like blackberry right? It shows it just as it would on your lap top??

THERE IS A GOOD REASON TO OWN A BLACKBERRY, but none of the OP's original requirements need an encrypted phone- I say Iphone 4 is good for him!

That right there is the reason I can't go to an iPhone.....I have an iPod Touch with wifi and trying to type on those things drives me batty without an "actual" key to press. The touch screen keyboard isn't something I could never go to with the number of e-mails I have to respond to per day.

FB....if you were interested in a BB the model which I believe is the top end one is slightly larger....I don't recall the model number but it is a bit wider with a slightly larger keyboard but it's NOT the one with the sliding face. My company gave me one of those and a month in on using it and I already put in a requistion for the one I just mentioned above.

Actually....here, this is the one with the slightly larger size to it.

If you have "stumps" on the end of your hand that you call fingers....try typing on an iPhone first and see what you think.

As for websites if they display the same way they do on my iPod touch they will look very similar to on your PC UNLESS....they have a "mobile" interface. For example when I use my iPod touch OR Blackberry to read CBC news you automatically get the "mobile" version. This may be different on newer iPhones and someone else may have to verify for you. On both my iPod and iPad quite often if you visit a site they will now say "we have an app would you like to download it"....or you can just continue to the site via the browser.

The Safari browser that the i-devices use is pretty good.....unless being pushed to a mobile version to view a site I think they all display pretty much as they would viewing on a PC.

I depends on what I am looking at. I saved all my favorites from my lap top to my phone and they all come up the same way I see them at home. Like SFBC, BWD and bouy reports all come up just as they would at home. But if go and search something often it comes up compressed but often the option is there to open normally. I have a huge data plans is I down load everything on my phone. I listen to hours of Tunein radio and youtube clips. When at work or well on trips I will watch local news. My phone is like having my laptop and more in my pocket.

As for they key pad...Turn the IPhone sideways and the keys are enlarged. I have tried typing on the tablet and hated it but the phone is easy. Had a captain at work the other day that couldnt believe how quickly I was sending messages to a friends and he is a BlackBerry owner. He stood offer me for a couple mins just to watch my typing. Thought it was pretty funny.

Get an android smart phone ...samsung. Want to pay for apps then go for the I-phone... Basically i-phones are good for Apple people and Androids are good if you are windows PC person. I have an android phone and tablet and they are perfect for the water. Both are loaded with navionics and all related Apps.

Its really a personal preference.

So are you saying Android apps are free?

I was originally leaning to an android (specifically the HTC One S (HD Cam/camera being the reason)) and because a few friends in the states have had enough of their iPhone's and said don't waste me time, go Android.

I'm left torn.

What about music playing? For the iPhone I need to up/download through iTunes correct? Can I just plug a thumbdrive or hard drive into an android phone and upload like that or do I just plug into my computer and copy paste songs onto the android?

Thanks for all your input guys.... I would go to a Telus store but I always feel like they are selling me on things I don't need, or understand for that matter.

Are you sure Owen ? The reason I ask is that I have GPS/Navionics App on my iPhone that works away from a network but the phone was sold to me a year ago as a iPhone4 ? I suppse they could have sold me a 4S thinking it was a 4 but that seems rather unlikely to me. Got the phone a year ago for $99 on a 3 year . The navionics App was $15.99 via itunes.

I just called a cell place in Courtenay. First he was under the understanding that you needed service for it to work then he put me on hold and came back saying it depends on the app. I know for a fact when I bought it the 4S the reason I bought it was for the Navionics funtion out side of mobile service areas. I have tested mine and it works great.

I have the HTC Desire HD and the camera is awesome. Also when you plug android into a laptop it basically turns into an external hard drive. For me it is way easier to transfer all kinds of files. Some apps are free but you have to pay for some too. The Navionics was $13.99.

Also my 12yr daughter saved her $300 and bought an I touch Ipod and when she went to set up I tunes, she put her date of birth and it said you are too young to have I tunes. So.... if she is too young for Itunes then why did they take her $300 dollars in the first place? All she wanted was some free game apps and the face time with her friends.

I have the iPhone 4, with a waterPROOF lifeproof case. GPS and navionics work without cell reception. I have played with a friends android navionics and the iPhone version is easier to use.

Also, there are free apps that u can get for the iPhone that allows u to put music on it without using iTunes.

I have an Ipod 4 with Navionics - Ipod does not have built in gps so I use a gps cradle. Works fine, but the screen on my Samsung Galaxy 3 is much larger, making actual use for navigation much easier - typing is easier too with the larger screen. I believe that the iphone screen is identical to the ipod. I am a mac guy, but as far as the phone, I like Android.
